Johnny Cash Tribute benefit updates

I am going to be out of town for a week, so I don't want anyone to lose momentum on their planning/ enthusiasm for the CASH BASH tribute on Feb. 25th at the Wheel House. I will return next weekend, and get back in touch with people; setting up a musicians get together for either Feb. 11, 18 or maybe mid-week Feb. 15th. Talk it up, and anyone who can put up flyers at stores, stop by my office and see if they can give you some. I will have some more attempts at newspaper publicity when I get back. Things are progressing on getting some musical instruments donated or reduced price for our raffle that will start with this Johnny Cash tribute benefit and end at the neil young tribute in November. We are developing this "sponsors" concept to try to draw some folks to make a more generous donation of support for the overall series, which will be announced the week I get back- Feb. 6th etc.
Meanwhile, bone up on those johnny cash songs, and get your set list together. Drop me an e-mail message if you think of something good for the event.

friday night songwriter night

Apparently Andy is taking part in a singer/songwriter night at Six Pence Pub tonight on 7th st (out toward kroger) in Parkersburg, that Todd Burge is organizing. Will take that in before leaving for Florida tomorrow morning. I'll try to get more details and organize my updates about upcoming events by the afternoon.

andy's friday night show

Andy had some new songs that he debut-ed (?) friday night at the show at the wheel house. Lots of folks clamoring for covers, though, too. A mid-range crowd; with a good bit of enthusiasm. Got a little plugging in for the Johnny Cash tribute show in one month.
Andy was heading up to Wheeling Saturday, to try to do a little recording.

andy plays tonight (Friday Jan. 20) at the wheel house

We're exciting that andy is playing tonight at the wheel house; eager to hear any new stories he has to tell; and to hear some accoustic stuff. We will be calling out for a wilson pickett tribute since he died yesterday. In the midnight hour and/or mustang sally would be suitable. We'll be listening for some new songs conjured up in the dark days of winter. We maybe should break out a "storm windows" duet for the season. We'll be catching up on any 2006 planning that Andy might have. And hoping to hear "starving artist." We were glad to get a little blurb in Free Time about the show, to maybe eke out a few more fans who don't drive by 4th and Avery in their daily rounds. And at least ONE person has said they "saw it on the blog."

Johnny Cash Tribute / benefit announcement

The Friday edition of the Parkersburg News / Free Time had the announcement about the CHS Benefit in the Americana Music Tribute Series; the Johnny Cash Tribute on Feb. 25th at the Wheel House in Parkersburg. Welcome to this blog if you saw it there and came to check it out. Feel free to look at back posts for the trail of announcements about the event; especially if you are a musician who is interested in playing; please contact me by e-mail or phone. We will be gathering those musicians who have expressed an interest 2-3 weeks before the event to share songs; equipment needs, etc. So either keep checking here, or give me your contact info, and I will contact you closer to the time. In the meantime, talk it up! And I am still looking for helpers to get flyers out, and some possible sponsors (businesses, individuals) to get us some "up front" money so we can make some Series t-shirts, door prizes, raffle prizes, etc.
Thanks!

music to charleston and back

In the CD player today; charleston and back: robert earl keen; "what I really mean" - grace potter and the nocturnals - kris kristofferson - adrienne young. that got me home. I actually had not listened to the Grace Potter CD much since getting it last summer when they played at the Rosewood in Morgantown (the Greens opened for them)- and especially liked (today) the song about "being my own ragged company."

Andy's updates

Andy opened for the Boogie Hustlers last friday (13th) at 123 Pleasant St. In Morgantown, with a impromptu 3 piece band; which he reports was able to put together some good music with no rehearsing as the opening act.
Saturday, the 14th the Greens played at Chik n Bones in Morgantown to a large rowdy crowd, with plenty of dancing and carrying on.
This coming friday night andy will be back in p-burg at the boreman wheel house for a solo show; spread the word for a mid-winter good-time-reprieve.

Keep spreading the word about the johnny cash tribute night Feb. 25th at the wheel house, too. Have anybody who wants to play some songs contact me; we will be getting some folks together to organize it 2-3 weeks before the event- a little audition/ dress rehearsal kinda thing.......

cd music to clarksburg and back

Listened to Johnny Cash (legend- a greatest hits kinda thing) and the indigo girls (rarities?) and bob dylan's masked and anonymous for this trip. I have recently read Greil Marcus' book about bob dylan's song: like a rolling stone, and there were some references to the masked and anonymous sound track and movie. The "other languages" version of some dylan songs.

a little Greens / andy's music update

Andy will be playing at the wheel house in Parkersburg on Jan. 20th (friday) this will be a solo show. Andy has two songs (West Virginia Dream and Big Ol Bessie) in the running of a songwriting contest. The copyright process is (finally!) underway for the Greens CD's. And a new "wave" of attempts at organizing the production and distribution of the existing "catalog."

recruiting "songs" for the Johnny Cash tribute

here are some songs that we presume MIGHT be requested at the Johnny Cash tribute, so if any musicians out there want to give them a whirl, contact me:

Man In Black
I walk the line
a boy named sue
ring of fire
folsom prison blues
hey porter
big river
if I were a carpenter
sunday morning coming down
ragged old flag
san quentin
delia
I still miss someone
daddy sang bass
jackson
it ain't me babe
orange blossom special
5 feet high and rising
don't take your guns to town
ballad of ira hayes
cry cry cry
get rhythm
rusty cage
i've been everywhere
long black veil
girl from the north country
what is truth
there ain't no good chain gang
(I got) stripes
swing low sweet chariot
the one on the left is on the right
one piece at a time
(late ones)
hurt
give my love to rose
the man comes around

give me a call or e-mail; we think we'll allow a little "doubling up" so don't be shy about wanting to do the "famous ones."

Friday, January 6th

Slow times for the ol' music journal. Guess I'm just a wee bit busy with work; and not able to "rise up" for music details. Saw Walk the Line last night, at the late showing. This was very good in prep for the Johnny Cash tribute. I'll be assuming that many of those in attendance in late Feb. (25th) will have seen it; so there may be able to be some references to it. I assume it was autobiographical enough, that he really had gotten the idea for Folsom Prison Blues from watching a documentary while he was in the Air Force in Germany. That was a good insight into the song writing process. June's early work/ versions of Ring of Fire was intriguing also. Though for some reason I had it pegged that she had written it earlier in the story..... And the scene where Johnny is in Memphis and intrigued by the shoe shine guys rhythm; and that ending up in a song was a nice touch. Shooter Jennings little bit was a connection; hearing that he was playing at Folsom with Joachim Phoenix recently; having seen him open for robert earl keen at Stuart's last year; before he even had a CD out.
Bill Poole called today; needing andy's phone number; he'd recently lost all his phone numbers in a cell phone switch. I got to ask him a lot of update questions about the live music prospects at the Front Row in 2006. I was very encouraging in my efforts to pitch local live music, but the hard cruel pressures of bar ownership is something to be reckoned with.

bringing in the new year right

The Greens played to a diverse, appreciative and celebrating crowd at the wheel house new years eve. It was great to see a wide range of Greens fan's from different locales and from different phases of their music. Looking forward to what 2006 brings for the Greens music scene.
