Greens friday night - marietta brewing company

The Greens are back in town this friday night. Marietta Brewing Co. They have had two good shows there this summer; including the reunion with Aaron Phillips. Saturday, Andy's time slot for the songwriter contest is 3:45 pm- playing downstairs at Olivers - 2:30 ish? Go to the songwritersnight website for all the details. Andy (hopefully) solved his conflict so he can stay for as much of the contest as he can.

travelin music

I listened to: Paul Simon's new Surprise on the way to Charleston; Robert Earl Keen's what I really mean; and the women's tribute to Greg Brown's songs (going driftless) to complete the round trip.

Miscellaneous weekend things

I wish I was in Athens Georgia tomorrow night for a road trip mountain stage- Todd Snider on the bill; vic chestnut, and some local talent.
I got Jason Wilber's two new CD's in the mail today- so I'll be reviewing them soon.
I got an e-mail due to my mentioning Minton Sparks months ago, when she was opening for John Prine in Kentucky. Letting me know about a DVD of hers.

Andy's time slots for the song writer contest next saturday are announced; I hope he can work out his conflict of scheduling. Many local familar names on the contest list.
Sorry to miss "linda lou" last night at the wheel house; just a little too tired out by the end of the week.
LIstening to bob dylan singing "I ain't got no home in this world anymore" - from 1968 or so- a woody guthrie tribute CD. His "modern times" CD is being released some time right about now.
Got the latest edition of No Depression yesterday- an interview with Todd Snider and Will Kimbrough is one of the highlights.

treveling music- p-burg to indiana and return

I drove to Indiana and back on Friday. I don't recall the exact order but my CD selections included: Tom Waits (heartattack and vine)- two of Robert Earl Keen's that I haven't listened to for a while; todd snider's new one; todd snider's last one; lucinda williams- both CD's of her live at the fillmore- john prine's great days (the second/ later CD) and bob dylan's blonde on blonde. I think this pretty much took me the 10 hours of driving time- I might have caught a little of WOUB at both ends of the trip. Kinda predictable set list for me- but it did me a world of good to listen to a long stretch of my favorite music. I don't get as much chance lately. Robert Earl Keen does not play around these parts much- mostly a texas and out west kinda guy. It makes his stop in nelsonville last year that much more valuable opportunity. I stopped at the dusty old vinyl record store in Madison indiana for about 10 minutes on the way out of hanover, and browsed; but didn't buy- mostly comparing the overall selection with what I have waiting around here. Proud of my new donations- eager to get them out to the public eye soon. The only one I might have bought in madison IN was a steve forbert record. I was looking for a certain grateful dead one for someone that specifically requested one a few months ago- thought if I could pull that off...... I'd be a record-finding hero. Also, recently "toured" the high street stretch in Columbus Ohio where there are a significant number of vinyl record used music stores- I had wondered about that- but didn't have the time to browse up there- just scope out the area near Ohio State U. Haven't ever been able to locate the Athens Ohio stores yet either.

Eager to hear about Tom Waits show in Akron

I'll be eager to hear more details about the Tom Waits show in Akron sunday. Steve Markle and Jessica Foster went from here; I don't know who all went with Andy from Morgantown/ Wheeling, etc. Everyone's first reaction was quite impressed. I saw the newspaper blurb from a Detroit appearance- first one in 17 years on this same tour.

greens show cancelled?

Andy told me there is no greens show at the wheel house this friday; some sort of mix up. Boo hoo. Andy is signing up for the song writer contest in Marietta Sept. 2 (saturday) at the colony theater and the washington state community college. Details later.
I have been having fun trying to characterize Neil YOung's music and his contribution to the culture, in preparation for publicity for the November 3rd tribute show. He is pretty amazing; it will be hard to capture everything in a one night event.

went to Mary, Mary's poetry/music thing tonight

Went to the "back to the beat (generation)- thing at the art center tonight, to check it out, and give support. It was an enjoyable mix of poetry readings and music. There was a crowd that basically knew each other from the Grind poetry readings, etc. I just sat back and took it all in. I think they must have been happy with the crowd and the mix of performers. The second sunday of the month 6-9 pm is supposed to be the time and day.

missed 1313 show last night

Sorry to have missed the 1313 show last night at the wheel house- coming back from columbus; and being on call. HOpe it went well; maybe someone could give me a report by e-mail/ comment here?

Greens back at the Wheel House

Friday, August 18th the Greens will be at the Wheel House. I hope to have some updates/ details about the fall Americana Music Tribute benefits around that time, too. I'll be recruiting musicians, primarily for the Neil Young (new event)- since I have a pretty good group of John Prine musicians (but can always use some new ones).
Todd Snider is going to be in Dayton OHio, for three shows the weekend of Sept. 15-17 at Canal Street Tavern.

Greens show / graffiti review

The Greens show at O'Hooley's in Athens was a good one; exposing new folks to the Greens. Its a nice place; a little small and not great "angles" to watch a band, but a good spirit about the place. Andy really enjoys playing before new people- and seeing what it takes to get them enthused about the Greens music. The variety of styles; the lyrics-content "vs" the instrumentation, suits different audiences, etc. They were "opening" for an act from Cincinnati- so it was just one 2 hour set; its fun to see what they are going to play in that length of time, vs a full 4 hour/ 2 set normal bar performance. Seeing them back to back two nights in a row is always impressive too, as they really have a pretty strong body of songs to work from for two nights in a row, without really scratching the full surface of things they could do (with covers thrown in). Andy introduced three new songs last night- it was back to the "good old days" of rehearsing and teaching Jan the bass lines in our living room in the afternoon before premiering them to an audience last night. I can remember past new songs getting the advantage of hearing them being worked out in rehearsal before incorporating into the Greens set lists.
J.F. Rote reviewed andy's solo CD in this week's graffiti- and gives him some good accolades- check it out on the CD review page- along with patrick sweany and tom petty and los diablos. I hope this generates some interest in the CD and some bookings.
I think the Greens have a show at the Wheel house August 18th (Friday) and a private party on the 19th. Maybe marietta on the following weekend- stay tune for updates, or visit their website(s) if Nathan has updated the shows section.

andy off next weekend

Andy will be going to see tom waits in akron next weekend; and a side trip to see steve mcginnis in columbus for his birthday? i'll be interested in a report on the tom waits show- a pretty rare opportunity. i'll be checking information on the zappa plays zappa show in washington dc on oct. 30th (saw info about it in the post friday morning......)

greens tonight (saturday) in Athens

The greens are playing tonight (saturday) in Athens at O-Hooley's- hope some loyal fans will make the trek over- we'd like to see the band develop a following in athens, too. Great show at the front row last night- very good energy and connection with the audience- they just can't get all the requests in any more- too many good songs.

Nelsonville music festival

The nelsonville music festival was a good event- a sweltering afternoon, moved into a hot summer night- but the music was solidly great all throughout- todd's set was short for the diehard fans- but a good exposure for new folks- the brave combo was very high energy and worth seeing if you get the chance. The early groups/ performers were fine- good diamonds in the rough, and good in case you hear about them again, or can pass the word on to someone else who might get the chance to see them. Let's hope this event keeps building, like the hocking folk festival. Stuart's got some good stuff coming up this fall. I hope I can keep picking up ideas from Tim Peacock, for use in my benefits/ live music shows.

Greens updates

The Greens report a great show in marietta last saturday, at the brewing company- six musicians for the price of three- tony, aaron, and adam sittin in. The crew stayed up all night relishing the rare opportunity to get together. The Greens will be at the frnt row this friday, aug 4th at 10 pm- just back to a stripped down usual version.
