Todd Snider- The Eastside Bulldogs

Todd Snider has a nice little fund raiser for flood relief in Nashville. A song and video under the group name The Eastside Bulldogs- including Elizabeth Cook, and Bobby Bare, Jr. they play a rowdy song "Come Up and See Me Sometime" with great video shots of places around East Nashville- really fun clips, and raccous singing, guitar playing and good fun.

Updates on June 12 Shindig- music festival benefit

We've got confirmation that Mark Spangler and the Minor Prophets will be joining us for the Shindig. Mark will add his special entertainer touch to this festival, as well as solid music from our buddies in the South of WV. I will be finalizing the schedule over the next few days with the musicians, now that the line up is set. Stay tuned. More backgrounds about the acts, too.

Traveling Music to DC and back

I had some of the same CD's in the car for the 5 hour trip to DC this weekend. I also listened to: Jason Wilber's Lost in your Hometown; John Hiatt's The Open Road; Fred Eaglesmith's "Dusty"; Robert Earl Keen's live at the Ryman; Billy Bragg and Wilco's Mermaid Avenue Volume II; KD Lang's Hymns ofthe 49th Parallel. I listened to Lucinda's LIttle Honey again; Bob Dylan's Modern Times.
Listened to John C. Fogerty's best of; John Prine's Fair and Square. AND listened to the new LIVE CD of John Prine (just out).

John Prine on Letterman tonight

I get word that JOhn Prine will be on David Letterman tonight, with Jason Wilber and a guest singing All My Best. Since I do not have TV, someone will have to tell me about it. Or I figure out how to watch it off the internet?????

Songs of the Day

Some recent songs of the day on my facebook page include: John Prine's Crooked Piece of Time; Neil Young's After the Gold Rush, Lucinda Williams, World without Tears, Bob Dylan's Chimes of Freedom, Adrienne Young's Plow to the End of the Row. Lots of comments when I posted Andy (Tuck's) Country Maestro, after a particularly inspiring version performed at 6 Pence Pub a week and a half ago!!!

June 12- Shindig

We are holding our first outdoor music festival (part of the year long Americana Music Tribute Series- fund raisers for CHS-Parkersburg) on Saturday, June 12, from 3 pm to 11 pm. Five musical acts will perform, all WV musicians. Final details of the line up will come out in the next few days. Please help us get the word out about this event!!!

Traveling Music - trip to the Mountains of WV

Had a trip to the Mountains of WV Sunday; won't be able to recall the complete listening set list, but it included: John Fogerty, Steve Earle, Adam Carroll, Lucinda Williams, Bob Dylan (Modern Times), were among the CD's.

Greens at 123 Pleasant Street last Saturday; opening for Karma to Burn

I ventured up to Morgantown on Saturday to catch the Greens opening for Karma to Burn at 123 Pleasant Street. This was (surprisingly!) my first time at 123. The Greens put on a rip-roaring set (30 minutes or so) of hard rocking music, to set the plate for Karma to Burn. They incorporated Greens classics like: Swamp Queen, The Lunatic in the Mirror, and Heavy Mentals, and did some non-stop hard rocking songs, with plenty of spirit. They got a good crowd reaction, and "left it on the stage" energy-wise! Karma to Burn had a loyal audience and really got the crowd fired up.

Bob Dylan Tribute

We held our third annual Bob Dylan Tribute last Friday (a benefit fund raiser for Children's Home Society of West Virginia-Parkersburg) at 6 Pence Pub in Parkersburg. Seven acts of music provided a dizzying array of Dylan tunes in styles and eras all up and down the Dylan song book. Jeremy Mayle, a true Dylan fan, plays out rarely, but really has some enthusiasm to support this event, and put on a good show. Aaron Whited is becoming a big supporter of the Tribute shows, and put on a good set with Mary Mary, and then came back later to jam some more. Steve Peck and his son, and Jonny Nutter are two solid mainstays of the Tribute shows, and always work up some great performances. Stone Road Band re-joined the Tribute series, after a little reprieve, and really rocked the joint. Don Howerton rushed off the little league field to join us, bringing his "veteran" music performer status to the fore, but unfortunately suffered through some technical difficulties and had to cut short his set, just as it was getting pumped up. Carly Stephens performed only one song, but did a great job and left folks wanting more! She has been a breath of fresh air in the sometimes "male dominated" Tribute series!

Ragged Old Truck- Todd Snider song selection yesterday in Nelsonville

Todd Snider played a Billy Joe Shaver song, in honor (I suppose) of Billy JOe being at the Nelsonville Festival the night before. Loretta Lynn connection is that fine duet they sing on Todd's recent album.

Nelsonville Music Festival - Sunday

Another wonderful day at the Nelsonville Music Festival- saw the three great acts on the main stage this afternoon. The Honeycutters were first; a duo, acoustic guitars - harmonies and good lyrical songs. Todd Snider with Great American Taxi backing him up was next. Finishing the whole festival was The Swell Season.
Todd with a backing band was fun; he was in good spirits, and enjoyed the rocking out on some of the songs. Started out with Play a Train Song; with a nice rocking beat and good harmonies from the fellahs; Tension was next: with the "in the moment" changes of lyrics in the key parts. He played his Song # 10 (money, compliments, publicity) in there; a good kick out the jams version of the Devil You Know. Bring 'em Home also really rocked out. Miss Virgie (Devil's Backbone Tavern) song came with no story told; sounded great after not having it on a set list for a while. Crooked Piece of Time closed out the set, other than a sing along "Will the Circle be Unbroken"-
The Swell Season had a lot of rabid fans there; pressed up close; recognizing first notes of songs, singing along- lots of emotions through this set- lots of quiet songs; lots of rabble rousing songs. Glen had some funny in between song banter, and they definitely have an adoring audience.
So Tim Peacock and all the gang put on another great festival, and can collapse from tiredness now, knowing they made a lot of people happy and impressed with the event!

Nelsonville Music Festival

Saturday's weather for the Nelsonville Music Festival was perfect; things were bustling with very great community spirit. The main stage shows were packed and lively; all the other smaller parts were full of happy friendly people. Going back today for the Todd Snider set, and everything else we can take in. This has been such a great festival to watch evolve into what it is, and where it will go.

Saturday, May 15, 2010

heading over to the Nelsonville Music Festival later today

I am heading over to Nelsonville shortly, to the Music Festival- lots of acts over the next two days! check it out. I'll be looking to catch Billy Joe Shaver, and Loretta Lynn, and Sharon Jones and the Dap Kings tonight. Todd Snider and the Swell Season tomorrow. Look for some report in a couple of days!

Greens show last night

The Greens played at 6 Pence Pub in Parkersburg last night. I was kinda disappointed in the size of the crowd, but the folks who were there made up for volume of fans with enthusiasm. The Greens started off with an acoustic set; showcasing Ben's new bass guitar. This was a set with "Mercy" LIttle Warrior, Sleepyhead, among the songs. Then it was on to electric- Ben and Andy switching out to electric's. Truckstop Religion was requested and a song that hasn't been on the set lists lately. This was a night of all original songs- 4 hours of music. Country Maestro was especially inspired, and got some very excited awe-laden reaction. The Greens, having not been in Parkersburg much, were comfortable in the confines of the familiar place, and gave a great show despite a discouraging turnout. I'm not sure we'll have them in Parkersburg again until our (Children's Home Society) Outdoor Music Festival on JUne 12th. I know they go over further into Pennsylvania next weekend, and some other jaunts. There will likely be a break after the June 12th show for a while; as Andy and Brandy are going out west for a few weeks, and band members reunite out in California for Aaron Phillips wedding at the end of June. So then we'll see what the summer brings for the Greens- some festivals and travels for show!

Book review: Ariel Hyatt's book about the music bidness

Nashville, Tenn. – In 2006, Ariel Hyatt, founder of Ariel Publicity in New York City, threw out the traditional publicity rule book and went digital, launching her venture Cyber PR, a web-based business that integrates savvy social networking tactics and Internet marketing best practices to help artists broaden their fan bases and accelerate their outreach.

Since launching, Cyber PR has successfully represented more than 500 thriving artists of all genres. Hyatt regularly blogs about the shifting paradigms for social media, PR, and marketing at Music Think Tank, a music industry public forum for thought-leading ideas. Hyatt travels the globe conducting seminars and master classes at respected conventions and universities and also hosts Sound Advice, a widely popular video and newsletter series, which offers information about the emerging music business for musicians and music entrepreneurs.

Ariel has found multiple ways to connect with and to empower others with her success-yielding philosophy and diverse tool set. Her most ambitious endeavor is her book Music Success in Nine Weeks. It provides the missing manual for musicians trying to make sense of the social media revolution and explains step-by-step how to create a profitable and sustainable business from their music. Just released in its second edition, the book can easily be deemed the “what to do next” bible for both new and established artists.

Taking a music product to the existing marketplace can be a baffling process for the novitiate, and Music Success in Nine Weeks demystifies topics such as how to capture and engage a fan base using Twitter, Facebook, and other sites in ways that make the artist stand out from the pack and does not overwhelm the artist in the process.

Reading Hyatt’s Music Success in Nine Weeks is like sitting down with your own personal and trusted advisor, telling you exactly what you need to do, why, and how – weekly.

Adamant about the power of branding, blogging, facebooking and tweeting, she explains how social networking does more than just get your name out there; it serves as a catalyst for building a devoted fan base and making more income. Her sage insights and brilliant suggestions de-stress the digital launching process, and allow artists to place themselves in positions advantageous to their creative and economic purposes in the midst of the digital atmosphere. With targeted, easily followed exercises, Hyatt encourages her readers to write ideas all over her book’s pages and sends them on multiple quests across the web to discover, and awaken opportunity that lies sleeping like a gentle giant.

Readers can even tap into the book’s online support forum called the Cyber PR Mastermind where they can get help and feedback from their fellow readers and peers.

“I am asking musicians to take off their artists hat for a minute and put on their business hat,” invites Hyatt. “In order to be successful, you must think about your fans as customers.” Her tactics and tools have actualized exponential success for her most active Cyber PR clients by giving them a solid business strategy. A recent victory for Cyber PR is client and American Idol top four finalist Michael “Big Mike” Lynche. He states, “Any independent artist trying to make it in the game on their own has got to have these tools. These tools are available with Ariel.”

WOUB Crossing Boundaries

I have been appreciating that Crossing Boundaries has been playing a lot of songs in preparation for the Nelsonville Music Festival this coming weekend. It gives you many opportunities to have an advance preview of music you might hear there. This is quite an eclectic mix of music for this three day festival starting Friday the 14th. Check out the website for the festival; or navigate to it through Stuart's Opera House. We'll be hoping for fine weather for the festival; which is quite a great endeavor to organize and accomplish for Tim Peacock and all the fine folks connected to it.

Or Else, expecting rain.........

ALL I REALLY WANT TO DOOOOOOOOOOO!

Bob Dylan's birthday quickly approaches, and with it, in the Mid Ohio Valley, is the annual Bob Dylan (near) Birthday Tribute show. It is being held again this year at 6 Pence Pub and Eatery on 7th Street in Parkersburg. Showtime is 9 pm. Local musicians play sets of songs of Bob Dylan. $5 donation supports the work of Children's Home Society of West Virginia in the Parkersburg area. For information contact me, Steve Tuck, at our agency office # 304-485-0650 (or call my cell if I've given it to you!!!) or contact me through this blog, or my e-mail: stuck@childhswv.org
We have some enthusiastic musicians lined up; more on that soon. For a number of years, Todd Burge and Mike Morningstar put together a roving Bob Dylan tribute in the Mid Ohio Valley; these were classy events- I remember them being held at: Bogies, Front Row, Crow Bar in Marietta, probably several other places, and even at 6 Pence once before. Come celebrate the music of Bob Dylan with other enthusiasts of the Mid Ohio Valley.

Ryman Auditorium History Lesson (buy your raffle ticket to be able to visit the Ryman!)

A House of History
Ryman Auditorium, a National Historic Landmark and former home of the Grand Ole Opry (1943-1974), continues its more-than-100-year music tradition by offering the best in entertainment. Open daily from 9 am to 4 pm, excluding New Year’s, Thanksgiving, and Christmas days, the Ryman offers tours that showcase the legendary stars who have graced her stage, from the biggest names in music to Mae West, Rudolph Valentino, and W.C. Fields. Then, in the evening, you can return to the premier performance hall for one of the many shows and concerts scheduled year-round.

Ryman Auditorium first opened its doors in 1892 as a vision of Captain Thomas G. Ryman. With the coming of the Grand Ole Opry show in 1943, the Ryman found its identity as the Mother Church of Country Music. In 1974, the Opry moved to its current home by the Gaylord Opryland Resort and Convention Center and left the Ryman vacant. It was not until twenty years later in 1994 that the Ryman was restored to be the national showplace that it is today. Musicians ranging from Roy Acuff to James Brown and Patsy Cline to Sheryl Crow have performed on the Ryman stage, making it a historical as well as a current-day icon for people everywhere.

McKinley All Star Band review of show last night

Fred Shreve and the McKinley All Star's Band performed a benefit concert for CHS-Parkersburg last night at Jefferson Auditorium. This was a big hit for a first time event. There were somewhere between 120- 150 people in attendance. Mostly folks new to CHS-Parkersburg and our Americana Music Series. They were mostly educators from the schools here, out to see their friends and cohorts perform. They put on a great show; including original songs written by Greg Syner and Fred Shreve, and some classic rock tunes that got everybody clapping and whooping it up. They were great showmen, engaging the audience, and solid in their musicianship and vocal harmonies. Fred had two funny songs portraying the life of a principal - one about boogers and one about pinworms, that were big hits with the audience. Both Greg and Fred can pull the heart strings with some sentimental songs about families, relationships, growing old. The "cover tunes" were well done, getting reactions from the audience, and done with lots of pep and enthusiasm. Their song selections and pacing the show, and use of multiple encore numbers showed a good sense of connecting to an audience. We raised over $800 to support our neighborhood work, which is closely tied with McKinley school, so everyone was happy with the event. We made some good future contacts with educators in the community, due to this generous offering of a benefit show by Fred and his bandmates.
