greens schedule change- in parkersburg tomorrow

The Greens will be playing at the Front Row IN parkersburg tomorrow night, Friday, 10 pm. This is change from the previously announced WV Brewing Co in Morgantown. The Front Row is one of the longest histories for the greens- with their thanksgiving shows going back 4-5 years? and andy's old open mikes etc. Hope there's a good crowd and it IS andy's birthday- so come out and wish him well- he's past 10,000 days now I believe. Here's hoping the next 10, 000 are good ones too. I don't know if anybody will be jumping up and down in their thunderwear or not. Old Joe better not forget what day it is; he best not be late for work.

a lull

I have had a lull in my musical thoughts- some folks went to see a member of Pink FLoyd in Pittsburgh over the weekend. Nickel Creek is playing in Athens tomorrow night. They are supposed to be going on hiatus sometime- lots of solo recordings coming out. The musical tribute shows are quickly approaching- probably not doing enough to get the word out. Sold only one more t-shirt lately from the americana music tribute series. Need to call a meeting of folks interested in weighing in on the 2007 tribute shows. Don't have any more details yet on the Greens battle of the bands time slot for October 13th. Listened to sarius radio on a trip up to wheeling sunday- found the coffee house rock station (30) for most of the trip. Lots of Jack Johnson played. Got my gift from my renewal subscription to No Depression- an intriguing selection of americana musicians. Have to decide whether to open it up and listen to it myself or give it away as a gift myself- to some worthy eclectic music lover. There will be other good music coming up at Stuart's through the rest of the year; I hope to be able to make it to some of them. Look at their website sometime. I don't know about the mountain stage at WVU-P this sunday. Whether I'll be coming back from Washington DC or not that afternoon.
Waiting for any updates on the Greens calendar, after that flurry of dates put up last week. Bogie's starting back up with Music? Well, enough for now.

Todd Snider show in Dayton

bill called from the "pre-game show" just to rub it in that he was there, and I was here. I assume he had a great time, and a great show by Todd- he'll undoubtedly have a story or two about bumping into Todd after the show- I should try to load his previous pictures.............

www.songwriternight.com

Todd Burge has a few new creative songwriter events coming up- visit that site for the details- some pretty good, diverse ways to get folks together for sure. Yeah!

greens upcoming dates

The Greens updates are on both the my space and www.thegreensmusic.com site now I think- actually some dates clear through the new years weekend.

Oct. 28th - Boreman Wheel House ( a sort of Halloween bash?)
Nov 3rd- morgantown- brewing company- with "Thred"- boo hoo a conflict for the Neil Young show- I was really looking forward to the greens being there.....

sorry to be missing the Todd Snider weekend in Dayton

I know I will be regretting not going to Todd Snider at the Canal St. Tavern this weekend in Dayton. This is a great venue; fond memories of previous Todd shows there. A definite must-go-to if people are traveling through Dayton. Three nights with three different opening acts.

andy last night in Athens

Andy had a suddenly announced gig as an opening act in Athens OH last night- sorry to not have known about it ahead of time; didn't make it over there. I'll wait for a report! He mentioned a possible gig at Bogie's next Friday, sept. 22nd. The Greens are in a battle of the bands October 13th out at WVU-P. A conflict with the John PRine tribute show, but he'll try to play at both. He's trying to secure the Greens schedule for the Neil Young show, as they will do a kick-ass set of Neil songs.

crosby stills nash and young in pittsburgh last night

Does any one have a report on the show last night in Pittsburgh- CSN &Y? I hope to incorporate someone's enthusiasm for that show into the planning for the Neil Young tribute on November 3rd here in Parkersburg at the Wheel House. I know Don Howerton went, but I don't think he reads my blog!
I have been reading a few reviews of the tour, but not with some direct ideas for the tribute in mind.
The 1313 guys will be looking into Neil's "rockabilly" stage for some songs. I need to call Jeff Fox to see what he's working on......

Poetry reading and music at the art center last night

Mary Mary had her second "back to the beat" last night at the art center (second sunday evening of the month)- and she had a good mix of performers- the turnout was a little smaller I think- but still pretty decent- lots of people left early- which was discouraging, as the music was good right up till the end. Her son had a great set of two original songs on guitar and then two or three instrumental jams with a guitar and bass and he playing the steel drums. He was one of those singer/songwriters that even though you have never seen him, could hook you in right away with his style/songs/presence. Very impressive. He is living in WYoming (he's a forester?) but is mobile, and looking to return to this area (WV anyway). Linda Lou played and put on an enjoyable set, with a little jamming from two other women on flute and drums. A woman from the song writer contest did some poetry and a cappella singing- which was impressive also. Mary Mary has good plans ahead- lots of invitees and a school age kids poetry contest planned for 2007. This is a nice thing going, and definitely worth encouraging and supporting. She is a most gracious hostess for the performers, and the crowd.

greens show turns into andy solo show

Friday's show at the wheel house ended up being an Andy solo show- good turnout; good crowd interaction; a couple of new songs incorporated into the requests and "flow," and Andy seemed content with the show. Nathan came and sat in on a few guitar accompaniments. He started a full time teaching job at P-burg Catholic HS this year. Jan is getting married October 14th. The Greens are participating in a battle of the bands on October 13th at WVU-P. I am hoping Andy's time slot works out for him to come to the John Prine Tribute benefit that same evening at the Wheel House.
Andy did a private party in Coolville last night.
Andy and I rehearsed some of our John Prine repretoire this weekend; it just takes a little to get us back going.
I'm recruiting takers for a "committee" to pick/ review the Americana tribute line up for 2007. Contact me.

listening

I listened to Bob Dylan's new CD modern times last night. I enjoy his voice and the instrumentations; as always it will take some repeated listenings to "get" the songs. It was interesting that Cd reached number 1 in sales; first time since "Desire."
I am listening to Greg Brown now- but with quite a bit of distractions. A mid-range drive is best for my first listen to a new CD- a captive audience, and no distractions.
I listened to Robert Earl Keen's live at ryman CD earlier. These are mostly familiar songs - and good live versions.

thursday miscellaneous

I got Greg Brown's new CD Evening Call, but haven't listened to it yet.
Greens tomorrow night at the wheel house.
There was a big article in the newspaper about the songwriter festival last saturday- good coverage for the event. Also an article about musicians using myspace- several references to folks I know in there.

mountain stage coming to WVU-P

Mountain Stage is going to be at WVU-P on October 1- 6 pm- the line up is not complete yet- but its going to be in the activities center. This will be a good opportunity for some exposure here - i'll keep looking for updates on performers.

songwriter festival

Andy participated in the songwriter festival on saturday sept 2 at Olivers in Marietta. 24 song writers participated. About half were people I had seen at some live local music scene around. Todd Burge was the host. Of course we were disappointed andy didn't win, but I think (hope) he was philosophical about it. He did "El Dinero" (i need money, lots and lots of money) and got a good response from the audience- the voting system might have been to his disadvantage- and only one song makes it hard- he is definitely more impressive regarding a wider body of work. he headed back to morgantown by the end of the "contest" part. We stayed to watch Diana Jones at washington state college in the evening- she was a good performer- and has a full page article in No Depression magazine this month, too- creating an interesting story/ background.
Good to see Don Baker at the festival- and he committed to his fourth year at the John Prine benefit.

Greens friday night show "revue"

The Greens played another high energy show at the marietta brewing company friday night- the 1st of September. I was a little leery when the class of 1981 from MHS was blocking the area in front of the greens set up- but they dispersed before the music started. Andy giving a nod to their reunion nostalgia. The loyalest of crews were there; and I think (with their 3 times playing there recently) some Marietta fans, too. They just can't squeeze in all the requests/ favorites anymore, with their pretty full stable of songs. It does get interesting how they intersperse stuff from all different stages. Its been awhile since I have been able to see them, and had almost forgotten that the new 3-4 songs were in the mix. Denise Headlee mentioned hearing Greens songs on 103.1 FM on the radio; so that is a second comment to that effect. I am stunned that the radio stations have the opportunity (from their corporation headquarters) to play local music!!!!
The Greens are at the wheel house this coming friday night- the 8th- for a long awaited return.
