andy at the wheel house- Feb. 9th?
My round about sources have andy at the wheel house sometime soon- maybe after the songwriter show at the blennerhassett hotel next friday the 9th (since that is an early show) more details to come.
I write about local music stuff in West Virginia and nearby Ohio. I post lots of information about the Greens and musical benefit events I organize for my non profit organization. Americana music focused.
My round about sources have andy at the wheel house sometime soon- maybe after the songwriter show at the blennerhassett hotel next friday the 9th (since that is an early show) more details to come.
I went to the my space for the Hot Sextet (that means 6 people in the band...... ) they are from morgantown, and have some mutual connections with the greens- I am not sure of who is playing when- ask questions going into Friday. They have keyboards, saxophone, flute, etc listed in their line up on myspace. This show is at the FRont Row in Parkersburg.
Todd Snider is going to be at the hock hockingfolkfestival in May (the 20th?- the exact schedule is not available yet)- this will likely continue his string of good well received shows in nelsonville and the run of good acts at the folk festival- fred eaglesmith, greg brown, iris dement, stacey earle, etc. over the last two years..... you can track down that website over the next few months as the details get clearer....
Now that we're about to turn the corner into a new month- you should be checking your calendar for music in February- the second installment of the songwriter nights at the Blennerhassett Hotel that Todd Burge is organizing is coming up Feb. 9th. Tickets/ seats are going fast- last one was a sell out, so get in on it now. Scott Miller, with an intriguing background and set of connections will be the featured performer.
The Hot Sextet is joining the Greens to play this Friday night at the Front Row in Parkersburg. You can probably get a little more idea about them from the Greens my space site and a little linkage work.
The Greens will be at the Front Row in Parkersburg (Emerson Ave) this Friday, Feb. 2nd at 10 pm. Come on out for what is guaranteed to be a great show. The local Greens fans are still revelling in the holiday season shows from Dec. and early Jan. and want to get their mid-winter dose of the Greens infectious music and cheer.
Making the connection: Todd Burge reported recently working on a tribute album for Blind Alfred Reed, a West Virginia musician, for the WV MUsic Hall of Fame (see Todd's website and blog for that information). Blind Alfred Reed's song: "how can a poor man stand such times and live" is on the Harry Smith's Anthology of American Folk Music Volume 4. We had the showing of the movie last night; a disappointing size crowd; but the movie was fascinating and intriguing in its web of connection to music of many eras; and the cultural impact and depth.
Its down to one day till the premier of the americana music tribute film series- Friday, Jan 26 7:30 pm at 1739 St. Mary's Ave. (door # 3) a showing of The Old Weird America- a documentary of concerts celebrating Harry Smith's anthology of folk music from 1999 and 2001, and interviews about the impact and influence of Harry's 1950's collection work with old songs from the 1920's and 30's. Various (eclectic) musicians and folklorists related the influence of his work on a wide range of musics of the 50's, 60's, 70's, and beyond. Its going to be a great kick off to the full 2007 Americana Music Tribute Series. Also, you'll get updates on ways you can help- with the live music shows coming up (the first is the Johnny Cash tribute Feb. 23rd) and the t-shirt sales, raffle promotions, door prize gathering, and publicity. Tell your friends, and come on out.
Apparently the Marietta Brewing Co. double booked saturday, so the greens are not playing there as it states on their myspace, and elsewhere. Their next show in the Parkersburg area is next Friday, Feb. 2 at the Front Row.
"Today it is impossible to overstate the historic worth, sociocultural impact and undiminished vitality of the music in [Harry Smith's anthology] and Smith's idiosyncratic scholarship and instinctive wisdom." Rolling Stone
My true and faithful correspondent from Morgantown reported to me on the show in Morgantown the other night of the Greens at Fuel. Tony contributed to the guitar work and there was a saxophone player helping out. I hope that show gets them 'jump started" back in the live music roll in M-town.
I drove to Clarksburg and Morgantown and back today. I listened to "Avalon Blues, a tribute to the music of Mississippi John Hurt on the way over. Chris Smither, Bruce Cockburn, Lucinda Williams, Alvin Youngblood Hart, Steve Earle and Justin Earle, Peter Case and Dave Alvin, Ben Harper, Geoff Muldaur, Mark Selby, Beck, Victoria Williams, Bill Morissey, Taj Mahal, Gillian Welch and John Hiatt perform songs of Mississippi John Hurt. Many of the songs will be part of the film Friday night.
I had a dream last night about this first effort to show a movie in my community room at CHS. It was pretty chaotic, but at least it was a good crowd- there was a lot of shuffling of chairs around, and fighting for the comfortable seats. The movie wasn't what I thought it was, but it was still good and captivating for the audience. The movie WILL BE CAPIVATING! There are some interesting connections made across generations of music; and there is some thought provoking insights into the impact of music/ culture on each other. I haven't worked real hard at publicity- just wanting to see what comes of it. The snow today is putting a damper on getting some handbill flyers out to some store's bulletin boards- maybe the next few days in the evenings......
Andy says he will be playing at the Front Row Friday Feb. 2- look for publicity whether this is a full greens show, or a solo show.
The Greens play at "Fuel" in Morgantown (Walnut St.) on the 19th of January. Spread the word!
People talked excitedly about the songwriter night at the blennerhassett hotel the other night, and looking forward to the series as a whole. There was even (gasp!) coverage in the regular local newspaper!!! Yeah!
MaryMary had a great little show last night, as a benefit for the art center. This was the regular second Sunday evening at the art center, 6-9 pm. But she got several folks to perform as a special event- Johnny Staats and company, Moon Mullen (mayor of Marietta), two poets, and a Celtic group- mostly folks from the Charleston area. It was a great overall show, with good variety, and good audience-engagement by all the performers. It went together very nicely. She has got to be pleased with the effort and hopefully the audience reaction and feedback will boost her morale.
I need to correct the date on the Harry Smith movie announcement a few posts back- its January 26th not 29th - Friday is the right day of the week. sorry about that.
2007 Americana Music Tribute Series
Friday, January 29th at 7:30 pm I will be showing the documentary, The Harry Smith Project aka Old, Weird America, at 1739 St. Mary's Ave. (Suite 3) in Parkersburg- for directions call: 485-0650. I'll just try to collect a $1 donation for the good of the cause; to cover some expenses of the Americana Music Tribute Series upcoming. Its about an hour and a half if I recall; if people are staying into it, there is the accompanying DVD that is footage of concerts over several years and locations with many of the same eclectic mix of musicians. I'll be describing it further over the next two weeks, if you haven't been aware of it.
Have you noticed no one has requested "feeling low down on high street" lately, or perhaps more remarkably, "never havin' sex again." Just interesting............ too country sounding?
I previewed (finally!) the DVD documentary of the Harry Smith project. It was a fantastic and fascinating movie. I hope I can convey to those not familiar with it, what an intriguing musical history work this is- I hope that I can, because this will be the first movie in the film series, which I hope to announce over the next few days for the end of the month. This is current performers recreating some of the songs from the original "anthology of american folk music" from the 50's that Harry Smith collected and put together. This body of work influenced many, many musicians throughout the 50's into the 60's, and then had a revival of interest in the 90's, culminating in the concerts and this collection on up into the 2000's. Check it out if you can pursue the web search in your own way to track it down. If you need leads let me know. There are some clips of concert footage of the various / diversified performers from the modern era; and lots of interview footage from an eclectic mix of musicians, and folklorist/ music history buffs. There is black and white film footage of scenes from the old south- front porch groups of musicians, etc. that are great. There is a lot of footage of Harry himself in all his eccentric glory. I'll be excited to share this with some music-lover folks if they've never been exposed to it.
The Greens continued their streak of fantastic shows; creating a momentum from the holiday shows on into the new year, with their show last night at the Marietta Brewing Co. This venue is proving to be a great spot for the greens, and their enthusiastic fan base to gather. The MBC must treat their musicians well- and the somewhat small performing area "works" for some reason- because the folks there really to hear the music seem to enjoy it just fine. I like standing along the hall way to get both a close view of the band performing but kinda stay out of others way!!
I know I get a pitiful response to my blog, but if any kind soul out there has any talent or interest in helping me design the t-shirt for the 2007 americana music tribute series, I'd appreciate it. Last year's navy blue shirt with the green lettering was well received, but I need a different scheme to distinguish the new series. Track me down; or I'll have to do it myself!!!
I'm listening to one of my "all time favorite songs"- play a train song, by Todd Snider- I got these CD's back, after Beth borrowed them most of last college semester (a truly great, fatherly sacrifice, to loan them out so long.....) so I'm listening to them eagerly/ hungrily. Now, its the Fred Eaglesmith song, alcohol and pills - I learned it first here on Todd Snider's East Nashville Skyline; but now I've heard Fred do it live also.
Look for the announcement next week of the 2007 americana music tribute series, that is a year long benefit for the agency I work for: children's home society of west virginia, and its parkersburg services to children, youth and families. We do some exciting work and have a lot of great people working hard every day to help, support and improve things for young people. The 2007 series will have a couple of changes; some on-going stuff, and lots of chances to participate in good music action, and support a good cause. If you want to help me with the "work" of putting it on, let me know- I love doing the work, but can always use the help of ones more savvy and with a better organizing sense!
The Greens will be playing tonight, Friday, Jan. 5th at the Marietta Brewing Company. The new year; fresh off the two unbelievable shows at the wheel house over the holidays. We'll see if they can sustain the energy and drive! (we know they can!!!!) We hope a good loyal enthusiastic group will turn out. They sure support their live music at the Brewing Company; steadily having a good lineup.
I've been missing a rendition of "Natural Voice" at recent Greens shows; (the one I call) Starving Artist; Mercy; tide turns again; little warrior; big ol bessie; truck stop religion.
The Greens brought in the new year to a raucous, rollicking group of revelers last night at the wheel house. The Wheel House was prepared for a big crowd- and were not misled. It was a high energy show and crowd response. Brett Cain opened, and played a set after midnight with the band. Tony Castillo was present to add to the guitar work. The Greens had a huge packed crowd up dancing the whole time- sardine city up front. They just can't get to all the requests- far too many now in the arsenal. Lots of great guitar work- inspired vocals; solid work by all the fellahs. Andy gave several tributes to James Brown throughout the evening. It was hard to finish the music, despite the guys being spent; the crowd was going strong. Another great bringing in the new year by the greens at the wheel house. I got another Green top hat souvenir to add to the greens historic archives- tried to get most of the set list- at least the first set on the brim of the hat- we'll see how it holds up- when they started back in after Brett Cain's second set, I kinda lost track of the covers, and the later set........
