tuck's music journal

I write about local music stuff in West Virginia and nearby Ohio. I post lots of information about the Greens and musical benefit events I organize for my non profit organization. Americana music focused.

Vinyl Record Sale- tomorrow

April 1st, Saturday, the vinyl record sale has come around. I'll be there setting up around 10:30 am hopefully; with the sale to run from 11 am to around 4 pm depending how the "flow" of visitors is. I have some interesting stuff gathered to amuse myself and anyone willing to stop by. We'll see how it goes? I am unveiling my new "theme" / slogan; for my music fund raisers; so if that arouses your curiosity, come over to the Sound Exchange.

Andy Tuck at 6 Pence Pub (7th St.) tonight

Andy will be playing tonight at this venue around 10 PM. The last time he played there, St. Patrick's Day was a packed celebrating crowd of enthusiastic music fans. Hope to hear what he's been up to, and what the next few weeks look like. Come on out, and tell your friends.

Vinyl Record sale Saturday

I saw my listing in the Bulletin Board; that was a new "venue" for getting the word out. I am gathering a few websites related to vinyl records to have around, in case the conversation turns that way, Saturday. Several people have called with inquiries so they must be seeing the announcements some place. I need a piece of poster board - about the extent of my creative artwork will be a poster announcement the "cause" of the record sale.

Townes Van Zandt movie at Stuart's

I went to see the Townes Van Zandt movie at Stuart's Opera House last night. Its a well done movie; with some interesting old vintage home movie type stuff interspersed with interviews of musicians and friends reflections on his life and music. There was a lot of family members and they obviously all had a lot of good memories and fondness; not any kind of scandals and negative baggage. He has three interesting kids of quite varied ages. Three wives all had different vantage points. Guy Clark was a hoot, and the various college and road manager types were interesting. Tim Peacock tried to roust some interest in some folks singing some Townes songs afterwards; I didn't wait to see if it materialized, as it looked like it wasn't; and I had the long drive back. I like to see how people at least TRY those sorts of things. There were I'd say, 50 + people there. Showing movies is a nice change of pace, they had a good set up for it there.

Date finalized for Woody Guthrie tribute event

July 15th, Saturday is now the official date of the next event in the Americana Music Tribute series. Exact details will keep formulating, but the main stay will be a night at the Boreman Wheel House, 8 pm- $5 donation. The afternoon event is shaping up to be an "all ages" - outdoor show, focusing on "kids songs" of Woody's. This is where the more details will be forthcoming. It is slated to be at Bicentennial Park in downtown Parkersburg; with food, (hopefully) Sponsors, so we can just make it a "pass the hat" thing. I will start putting the word out for musicians soon; but several folks have begun rehearsing their Woody songs.

Greens venturing to Georgia?

If you may have noticed, on the Greens My Space web site, they have listed a show in Commerce Georgia on April 21st. We'll be eager to hear what develops with that. If anyone knows details; send them my way..... It must have something to do with Mike Chenowith's connection. We hope the guys "WOW" em in Georgia.

traveling music Thursday Clarksburg and back

I listened to Tom Waits (Used Songs) ALL the way to clarksburg. On the ride home, is was Sharon Shannon (Irish instruments, mixed accompanists like Steve Earle- Galway Girl, and John Prine, Jackson Browne, etc.) and Adrienne Young (art of virtue) - she will be at the purple fiddle April 6th- on a whirlwind trip across these parts....

traveling music - MOnday to Charleston and return

I listened to Lucinda Williams - live at the fillmore (2 CD set) for most of the trip- all the way and most of the way back. Then finished up the trip with robert earl keen- walking distance. Lucinda live was a good follow up to the concert last week- though that was acoustic and this was definitely full band- good to hear the contrast of what the shows are like. Many of the same songs.
Saturday it was Grace Potter, and Sarah Guthrie and Johnny Orion, and an "in radio" mixed selections.

Wheel HOuse Saturday night

The power duo of Andy and Nathan laid it all out for the crowd at the Wheel House last night. There is developing an intense following of enthusiasm for the sound they create; folks have said the Bogie's show March 10; the 6 Pence Pub show friday night, and the show last night, create a streak of inspired music and connection with the audience. You could definitely acknowledge the diehards who were at back to back shows as being caught up in the momentum. A different enough set list, and with the inclusion of the drums, it was a entrancing night. Mike Chenowith worked hard to keep several guitars tuned in cycles, and especially the second and third sets were some very impressive guitar work. Andy and Nathan have the great togetherness of shifting tempos, segue-ing into other songs, etc. from years of playing together. The dancing has gotten so lively/ exuberant that its almost creating its own phenomenon- I hope it keeps building; and not even every block of Greens fans were there; noticeably absent were some of the recent clusters of fans. (Some were probably just not quite able to make 2 nights in a row)
Big ol bessie was done at a completely different way; Beekeeper hadn't been part of recent shows; apocalypso was back to being a closer (though the encores went on for quite a while after that......) Truck stop religion started a little unrecognized until the slide guitar kicked in. Lots of Hendrix on this particular night.
Steve McGinnis had a big crew there; good to see him in town from Columbus. I don't know all the background story on Ian Williams "police look."
Adrian was still sporting the St. Patrick's day "green." (fishing hat) Dave McIntyre came in after a late shift at work. Cory Shields seemed enthralled with Andy's guitar work.
Stay tuned for an updated schedule; I don't really have much knowledge at this point; I'll catch andy before he heads back to Morgantown if I can.

Okay, the Cherryholmes show

Stuart's opera house in nelsonville had two sold out shows this week (good for them!) Last night was the Cherryholmes. A family of blue grass; father on bass, mother on mandolin; oldest daughter on banjo; oldest son on guitar, youngest son on fiddle, mandolin, guitar, and ukulele (that doesn't look right)- and youngest sister on fiddle. Good vocal "blood harmonies" and some mighty fine clogging and buck dancing at key moments. Father tells some jokes, some good intra-family teasing and stories. A very appreciative audience; all in all a good show. Mom's yodeling was also a highlight. That is definitely a popular genre of music for the southeast ohio area. I may venture over to see the townes van zandt movie next weekend at stuart's. Otherwise, not sure of what i'd see next there; other than the hock hocking folk festival in May. Still a conflict with the ohio river folk festival in madison indiana on the same day, May 20th. Still a ways off..........

Vinyl Record sale- coming up April 1st

This is no april fools joke- there really will be a vinyl record sale as a benefit for Children's Home Society of WV on april 1st, from 11 am to 4 pm in front of The Sound Exchange on Murdoch Ave. in Parkersburg (on the way up to grand central ave. etc.) The Sound Exchange, a great local business, and great concept, is graciously allowing me to set up a table out front (weather permitting!!!) or in the door (weather not permitting) with a select group of the millions (exageration) of records accumulated last year at the two events held outside the st. mary's ave. office. I will also be selling t-shirts of the Americana Music series, and raffle tickets for the guitar and other items raffle (to be drawn at the Neil Young event in November). I will also be plugging what ever live music stuff I can (that is upcoming) and trying to negotiate anything I can to promote live music and musical fund raisers for my worthy cause. Give me some signs of life that people are spreading the word about the vinyl records sale- last years two events were a little disappointing in the turnout; very good in terms of donations of records; though i am getting a huge collection of probably un-sellable ones........ that will have to be creatively passed on.

tonight- wheel house (can andy follow up last night?

I THINK tonight is a full fledged greens show, but I really didn't get to get all the details from andy- he was far too busy all the time I was there..... I am doing this entry remotely from up north in Bethany College's coffee shop. SO, you'll just have to come out tonight and see what the music is...... Andy Huggins was tuning up some blues songs ...... I hope Andy (T) was not too too hard on his guitars last night- he really had the frenzy going-on.
Two nights in a row is a definite treat; a rarity; an event. I will look closely for the repeat regulars and enthusiasts especially the dancers, to see if they can "hang." It will be good to check in with the wheel house staff too, since I guess I haven't really been down there since the johnny cash bash.

Andy at Six Pence Pub- st. patricks day

I was totally unprepared for the crowd at the st. patricks day event at 6 pence. I got there late because we had been to stuart's opera house in nelsonville for the cherryholmes (blue grass music) show (which was excellent, and another story....)
6 pence was PACKED- a huge turnout; hard to get a handle on everyone who you knew there.... Andy had them already pumped full throttle by the time I got there. He went through a good mix of party tunes; his own; and select covers of his own choice. Lots of enthusiastic friends; lots of enthusiastic dancing, especially there toward the end. I saw A LOT of the good Johnny Cash tribute participants; very good to see them, and still see their enthusiasm for THAT show, and upcoming benefits.
There was some grumbling about the Greens not being fully present; apparently a preference of the management; to have solo performers (on friday nights) or something. Of course, Andy was up for whatever task was laid before him; but Greens fans saw a good opportunity for a full band outing, with the holiday celebrators.
Apparently I have been ignorant of st. patrick's day's allure to the partyers. I THOUGHT I would be coming to a pretty standard Parkersburg live music scene, but was quite awed by the festive nature of the crowd.

crossing boundaries

I don't take much opportunity to express appreciation for WOUB public radio station; and their evening daily show- crossing boundaries- what a great local treasure for me. Most evenings I will at least catch a segment; and it is the closest thing I have to something I would program; even with the surprises and unknowns- it exposes me to some; and re-affirms some of my most rooted tastes. The thread between stuart's opera house; mountain stage, no depression magazine are uplifting for me on hectic days, and wiped out evenings. 91.3 FM- usually 7 pm - 10 pm, and then a later segment.

Greens recap from friday; and looking ahead

The Greens had a good turnout of enthusiastic fans friday night at Bogies. Lots of dancing as the evening progressed. Lots of the loyal - true-Green (get it not true-blue) fans, coming for the monthly (or so) opportunity to enjoy the tunes and antics. Early on, Andy was accommodating requests, trying to keep the customers satisfied.... the Greens have so much music "in their repetoire" that many usual crowd favorites could not even be fit into the 4 hour set list. Some EARLY jimi hendrix covers for instance. Andy had the dark brown guitar out for a goodly portion of the show; I guess finally breaking a string pretty far into the show. There were several (more than usual?) instrumentals throughout the night, maybe that superseded the traditional fan favorites for the night.
Andy has two solo shows next weekend here in Parkersburg- friday night at 6 pence pub (or whatever the exact name is) and saturday at the wheel house. So following another week of construction labor he'll be back in the 'Burg. I don't know if St. Patrick's day is particularly a big holiday or not. I don't know much schedule beyond that.

greens at bogie's tomorrow night

The Greens will be at Bogie's tomorrow night, AT 10 PM - ish. We hope they have a good turn out for the show. I will be rasping my way through the rest of this sore throat. Now carrying on a daily (if possible) dialogue with Ken S about Woody Guthrie, and now Leadbelly. The thread between Leadbelly and Nirvana and the like. Then the brainstorming gets going.

woody guthrie enthusiasm

I was excited that someone came to ask me about the woody guthrie event and what some of his songs were; and a little perspective on his influence to music of later generations. Ken had obviously done some homework; so it was an easy sell. I gave him some song titles to check in to; I'll probably compile a list kinda like I did before the Johnny Cash show of songs that might commonly be requested to sing. Now, of course, Woody wrote 1000's of songs so it will only be a tip of the iceberg. I will gladly hope that some folks, exposed to woody guthrie songs from Wilco and Billy Bragg's mermaid avenue collections would choose those sorts of songs to perform. I recall fondly the Greens playing California Stars at new years eve show at the wheel house- with aaron phillips inspiration.
I got interrupted telling Ken about ramblin jack elliott and the 90th birthday tribute at the Ryman auditorium, and the ribbon of highway, endless skyway tour, and other things that will wait for another day.

Further words and corrections - John prine show

So I spelled Jason Wilber's name wrong; sorry- I read the exchange trying to guess his age on the jpshrine "chat." They concluded he is 28. Something like playing with john prine since age 18. He has a new CD of his own coming out; I have three of his; try to support the Indiana feller. I will track down background on Pat McLaughlin, too; what his gig is- from Waterloo Iowa? He puts one of a mind of Fred Eaglesmith's back up band folks. Really enjoys himself on the stage. A movin' groovin' fellow.
Of course I dug Storm Windows, with three part harmony- he introduces it like Andy- "this is a winter song, better play it while we can- weather wise."
I didn't want to tell Andy that we LIKED the background vocals in "taking a walk"- the Ray Coniff background vocals- with Pat and Jason doing the echo part. When you know that JOhn did that on purpose, for effect, it does make it kind of cool. JOhn did not break a string on Lake Marie, but he did do his little hip thing (with his artificial hip). Sweet Revenge as one of the encore songs has been a nice thing recently.

musical events upcoming

I am getting back to Stuart's Opera House in Nelsonville this upcoming week; its been awhile. Lucinda Williams on Sunday night (sold out) and the Cherry Holmes family (probably sold out by now) on Friday. They are also, the following week, showing the Townes Van Zandt movie on 3/24/ and 3/25. Which I would like to take in.
I visited the Greens "myspace" today; I still can't quite figure out how to navigate around those yet; but there was some enthusiasm shown by the visitors. I suppose its something like: www.myspace.com/Greens or the greens, or something similar- I got to it from Nathan's e-mail. Trying to get the word out for the friday show; and then its says Wheeling next weekend? no location listed. St. Patty's day...........
Looking farther ahead; greg brown and fred eaglesmith BOTH at nelsonville (hockhockingfolkfestival) on May 20th - a good venue - bring a chair, etc. and stay for the square dancing late at night!?!

JOhn Prine show

I'm still riding high from seeing JOhn Prine Saturday in Prestonsburg Kentucky- we had third row seats and really enjoyed the venue and crowd, and of course John and his crew. Pat McLaughlin was a new addition from recent years shows, he co-wrote some songs with JP; and played a rocking mandolin and a little electric guitar and added harmony vocals on a few more songs than Jason Wilbur does. Jason was fantastic as always on guitar, mandolin and harmonica- we were on his side of the stage, so could really enjoy his contribution. We were definitely close enough to really hone in on John, too; and come away so bolstered by his performance; enjoyment of the audience, and everything about it. I'm keeping this brief; more details later, and more about the opening act.
Greens at Bogie's this Friday night.

Friday - nuthin' much to say.......

Hello, its Friday; nuthin' much to say (a little dull). Andy plays in Morgantown this weekend; we'll eagerly wait a report on the show at the Brew Pub. Then I think it will be back in Parkersburg at Bogie's next weekend, but I'm not even sure of the night. (and I will begin putting the times of the shows on the blog!!!) ahem, sorry about that Ryan.
Heading out for the annual John Prine trek tomorrow to Prestonsburg Kentucky (Mountain Arts Center) a sold out show- look for the report. This is the show with Minton Sparks opening. John Prine fresh off the Grammy award for best contemporary folk.
Still getting a few enthusiastic and positive comments and recollections on the Johnny Cash tribute.
I am announcing the first 2006 Vinyl Record Sale; for April 1st Saturday, in front of the Sound Exchange on Murdoch Ave. from 11 am - 4 pm. I'll be there setting up just one table full of vinyl records for sale, as a benefit for CHS. I'll try to pick the most intriguing ones from among the multitudes of records we collected last year...... Look for the usual publicity venues for this fund raiser, and come on out and browse, and give me encouragement; buy a raffle ticket for the guitar, or talk about the Americana Music Tribute series, or bring me a cup of coffee from Tim Hortons, or River Valley Bagel, etc. etc. etc.
