A few Pix from the Greens show last night-more to come

Andy' really putting his heart and soul into that note.

Greens at work; familiar stompin' grounds. This must have been a more subdued, mellower song.

Mirror images overlay- kinda eerie.
The captions didn't end up where I wanted them...........

Greens rocked the Front Row last night

The Greens played the Front Row last night. A good size crowd accumulated a little ways into the show. The Greens continued their recent trend of a very diverse set list, pulling a mix of songs from their repetoire. Bill was snapping away the pictures, which I'll transfer a few later in the weekend; along with some from the Jason Ricci show. He is a picture takin' fool these days, going back to the Bob Dylan birthday tribute. It was good to catch up with Jeff Fox some; good to see Shannon out at a Greens show. At the end of the night, Danny got some tips on some venues down South from a fellow. Some Pink Floyd tunes were some of the more unique turns of the evening. The Greens are on to white water rafting country this evening.

Jason Ricci show recap

Jason Ricci played to an enthusiastic crowd of Blues music fans last night at the Front Row. Later I will post some pictures Bill Poole took of the event, to give you a flavor of the band. Jason had bleached blond hair this time around. It was a familiar Blues crowd, who gave him (and the band) lots of response for the solos (all instruments during the evening)- and for the high energy performance. He sold a lot of CD's during the set break!

Jason Ricci comin' up in a little over an hour!

Though I have had a long day at work, I will be heading over to the Front Row momentarily to catch Jason Ricci's fabulous show. I hope we have a good turnout- no one will be disappointed! I will enjoy shifting gears after 3 straight 12 hour work days! and working on the holiday, too!

Traveling music up and down I-77

As mentioned yesterday, today was woman's day in the CD player for the travel down to Charleston and back. Kathleen Coffee's premiere CD (self titled!!) was in, carried over from last night. Her CD (live performance) is amazing for a debut album- lots of confidence in songs, voice, and instruments.
Then it was good ol' Lucinda- Essence. As I have said many times (I believe) Lucinda is my favorite female singer! Always good to get a good dose.
Then it was Angel Band for a full length listen. This is an excellent CD- just all the things I had said previously: great harmonies, good mix of styles, good musicianship by "Chum." Its got parts of gospel-y sounds, the second song rollicks with a Cajun style; there are mountain ballads, modern type ballads, more spiritual/ gospel sounding things. Sweet Honey in the Rock kind-of stuff; And the lyrics are solid; down to earth, uplifting, diverse, great turns of phrases.

Finished up with Holly Long; the one Patrick had sent to me a few months ago; this time around sounding familiar and appreciated. You don't like to compare/ name drop comparisons, but you hear similarities to Cowboy Junkies, Over the Rhine.

Jason Wilber's June 8th house concert here

I'm still promoting the great opportunity to come hear Jason Wilber in the intimate setting of my coffee house/ house concert here in Parkersburg at 7 pm on Sunday evening, June 8th. Tickets are $15 and I am still encouraging folks to pick them up ahead, because I do think it will get packed; I'll have to make some determination about numbers closer to the time. This is at 1739 St. Mary's Ave.; the middle store front. If you would like to get a listen to Jason ahead of time, visit his my space site for a few songs, or his web site with his name. I also have all his CD's if you want to borrow that format, I'd be glad to let you listen for a few days. I'd like folks to be familiar with his songs when he comes.
Reminder he will be flying in from Red Rock, Colorado from a show with JOhn Prine on June 6, and playing as the culminating event in the all day songwriter event in Marietta on Saturday the 7th. His show, with two opening performances by winners of the songwriter contests, will be at 8 pm . $10 for this show.
I will be checking in by e-mail with Jason one of the next two days, to see if there are any updates or things to pass along.

Traveling Music today- just Charleston and back!

I got to listen more intently to Dan Colehour's CD "Straight up the highway"- today, which Fred had clued me in to. This was my first leg of the trip. These are solid "mid western er" songs about small town, the common man, hard working folks.

Then I listened to Bob Dylan's Modern Times. I wanted a fresh listen after hearing the two songs the Stone Road band played at the Birthday tribute.

Finishing up the trip was: Jason Wilber's Live and Otherwise Volume I. This is his 2006 release, with some songs from various albums done in a live setting. Its a good combination for a sampler; showing his versatility from a variety of albums.

I turn back right around tomorrow and have another trip to Charleston, so there will be some female voices tomorrow!

The Greens at the Front Row this Friday

The stage at the Front Row will barely have a chance to "cool down" from Jason Ricci's show Thursday night, before the Greens bring their high energy and diverse styles of music within 24 hours of Jason's leaving the stage. They will undoubtedly gather a raccous, fun loving group of enthusiastic fans to dance the night away, and shout out requests, and be swept up in the satisfying emotion of digging the Greens music, through several hours of waves of musical wizardry and hi-jinx. It is fun to re-connect with the Greens fan-dom every few weeks in this way, as friendships and connections keep getting stronger and more solid, with each passing month of enjoying the Greens sound. Its kind of a contradiction in terms, but 1) you can always count on a diverse and varied show from one time to the next- the song selection meanders through different veins; and 2) you can always count on the comfortableness and familiarity of the Greens sound to leave you contented and satisfied at the end of the evening (or early morning as it were.) It is very nice to watch them perform enough to follow how the newer songs get worked into the set lists and become "mainstays." And then to experience them pulling an older song out of their pockets and causing the excited reaction of recognition among the loyal listeners. Hope to see you there, Friday night the 30th at the Front Row in Parkersburg.

Jason Ricci show this Thursday at the Front Row

If you haven't heard, or heard of, Jason Ricci, please do the necessary web searching for a glimpse of his high powered music and performance. Myspace or website will do. You can link to it from the Front Row's website, and see recent reviews, articles, clips etc. He will be performing at the Front Row Thursday of this week, at 8 pm. You can get advance tickets at the Front Row. Heck, I can get them for you if you want; just track me down. I've got my two tickets. I'm not gonna be able to say anything that hasn't been said by someone more eloquent than I, but this is really a great opportunity right here in town, to see and hear a great act. I hope you'll come out. These events always leave the crowd satisfied, and connected to the performers and the others in the audience, because of the pretty intimate setting, and the feeling you are part of something unique for Parkersburg. Jason is a very personable guy, and exudes his love of performing, and putting his all into each performance. His band is a great extension of his energy and are very accomplished musicians with their own intriguing stories.

Todd Snider's you tube Dock Ellis song

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sugCwMxwPRk

This link should take you to a very nice little rendition of Todd Snider sitting in a hotel room performing his song "america's favorite past time"- his song about Dock Ellis of the Pittsburgh Pirates throwing a no hitter while on LSD. Todd is performing it for Don Was, of Was (Was not), who is enjoying it. This is yet another excellent example of Todd's ability to write a killer song about something in the American culture experience of a quirky nature. Like DB Cooper, the song about the guy who hijacked a plane out on the west coast, and parachuted out of the plane with the money. Or Phil Ochs, getting kicked out of the limosine that Bob Dylan was riding in, because he criticized a new song Bob was working on. Or Mike Tyson's "main man's" last request. That kinda stuff.

Angel Band

I have started to listen to "With Roots and Wings" the new release by the trio of women. Its going to be a great one to share and spread the word about. This is a release on Appleseed Recordings; a label with Pete Seeger, Tom Paxton, etc. connections. They are Nancy Josephson, Jen Schonwald, and Kathleen Weber. David Bromberg (Nancy's husband) contributes some music as part of the backing musicians. They have fabulous harmonies, a wide ranging song selection style, and wide diversity in the backing instruments. I'll follow up on this review after some more listening!

They were playing this weekend over in Cumberland Maryland at the big Del McCoury festival- lots of great acts at that event- you can't be everywhere at once!

Bob Dylan's meandering through my life

I had my "coming of age" years through the 60's, and the music of that era had a big impact on me at the time, and since. I was a pretty much "eclectic" music fan through that era, listening to a lot of radio. Music was always a "backdrop" to what ever was going on in your own life, and the wider world around you. Dylan, in my junior high and early high school years, was just one of the many, to be honest. You knew the "big" songs, the "hits"- LIke a Rolling Stone, Blowing in the Wind, etc. The ones that would end up on the Greatest Hits collection, and you knew he was BIG, and influential, but you also had your long list of other favorites and had them ebb and flow, including the "one hit wonders" etc. My brother was two years older, and when he went off to college, and returned for the school breaks, I think that might have been when I began to hear about Dylan in a more intriguing and "paying attention" way. I had albums before that, Beatles, Stones, etc. but to be honest, I probably didn't really know specific Dylan albums until this time. I probably actually got "started" knowing his music more intently with "Bringing it all back home, blonde on blonde, highway 61 revisited- which at the time were "middle albums"!!!!
Then the Greatest Hits Volume II was a big thing for me, cause it fleshed out the first volume greatest hits with some that you knew, but it also had these unknowns from the Basement Tapes / The Band / Music from the Big PInk era, etc. Then John Wesley Harding and Nashville Skyline, and by then, I was "hooked" on his ever evolving styles and accompanying musicians.
As I dropped out of college and was doing quite a bit of traveling and "seeking"- That's when Blood on the Tracks came out, and (in hindsight, as a number of reviewers and music critics have cited)- this was quite a landmark album- these were the first Dylan songs I began playing on the guitar- wailing away "idiot wind" etc. You're gonna make me lonesome when you go"-
Desire, and the violin intro in his songs was also nice, with those long story songs.
I didn't really react badly to his "born again" phase- I equally liked, and still do, a lot of songs on slow train coming quite a bit- I use "when ya gonna walk up and strengthen the things that remain" as one of my philosophies on life actually- that there's a bunch screwed up with the world, but we might as well strengthen the things that remain........
I hung in their buying those albums, I think "every grain of sand" is also among the greats.
I lost track of Dylan somewhat, raising a family through the 80's and into the 90's- there was school events, sports, etc. etc. etc. But you always perked up with some latest news about Dylan, and as I aged, my appreciation and "tolerance" for his everchanging ways grew also, there were always plenty of other "critics" enough to go around, so I could just acknowledge that someone with that incredible history of creativity and impact could "do whatever he wanted to" and that was okay with me.
I liked the 2000's albums just fine, and liked that many critics were positive about them. After hearing the two songs that Stone Road played off of Modern Times, I was particularly excited by their interpretations, and once again struck by the powerful impact of his overall body of work, and how it can constantly be making people happy about music.
Happy Birthday, Bob.

Some more action shots of folks who performed at the Bob Dylan birthday tribute benefit May 24th at the Front Row in Parkersburg WV. From the top (left) The Stone Road band; Todd Burge and Jeremy Mayle, bottom left: Jan Gant, Jeremy Mayle. These guys poured their hearts and souls into the music, just playing for the love of the music, and the influence of Bob Dylan and all the music of the last 50 years.

Songwriter event in Marietta June 7th

If you go to the website, www.songwriternight.com there is now some information about time slots and who is participating in the contest, and showcases that day. This is nice to begin to see who all is participating. It promises to be a great event for the mid Ohio Valley live music scene. Come out and stay all day and evening! This day culminates with a chance to see Jason Wilber, who is a great singer songwriter with a solid collection of songs and CD's. He has a very fine voice, stellar guitar work, a wry sense of humor, and a great way of capturing the human experience in lyrics. And besides ALL THAT, he is an unbelievably talented part of John Prine's touring band, adding so much to so many of John's songs with his guitar work, his harmonica, and mandolin.
I have two "favorites" in the songwriting contests, (regular readers can probably guess:) Andy Tuck, and then I am excited Kathleen Coffee is coming up for these events, based on Andi Roberts et al's encouragement and connecting her to Todd, when she was up for the show at my coffee house a few months ago.

the goofy pictures from the Dylan tribute show

Well, it can't be ALL serious music at one of these events, can it?

some pictures (the serious ones) from the Dylan birthday tribute at the Front Row

Here are six of the musical acts performing; thanks to all these great musicians for participating in the tribute!

Recap of Dylan Tribute

Thanks to all the enthusiast music lovers that came out last night for our first attempt at a Dylan Tribute among the Americana music series. You all make it worthwhile and keep me going. Thanks to Bill for being a great host, and booster of music in many forms. Thanks for the great pictures, too!!! Hope we can have some more of the events at the Front Row, we'll talk! Thanks to the Front Row crew for keeping the customers satisfied; hope it was a good Saturday night for you all, too. Mainly, thanks to the musicians who came out and performed- there was a solid line up all night, everybody put a lot into their sets and they all sounded great. Thanks to Cory and JT for the sound work; it was set up nice, and you made it run smooth with all the switching musicians, and kept at the details right to the end. You guys are great to work with, its been a pretty fun ride these few years - hope for more to come.
Thanks to my contestants in the various contests, I know I subject you to much for my meager trophies, but its for the good of the overall spirit of the events. I hope the "serious" door prize winners all are pleased with something they came away with- I was glad some folks picked the shirts!
I hope I'll get some feedback, but I think it was a good night of music and celebration. Jan Gant got us started with Knocking on Heaven's Door, and Don't think twice its alright. Jeremy Mayle came out of "semi-retirement" to wow us with some great renditions of Dylan songs. He's got a great voice, guitar work, and intensity that impresses. Then we had the Stone Road band; and they were very much a crowd pleaser- they did two newer songs (from Modern Times) and those songs sounded like they were meant for this band- they had some versatility of song selections, and their band sound was a great contribution- you can tell they work hard and take pride in their band work, and we'll look to see some more of them out and about and around town. I think they were in discussion with Bill about a booking. They will be performing at our CHS coffee house most likely sometime in July- so stay tuned for that. They will undoubtedly perform at the Neil YOung tribute later in the year, and probably have some other surprises for an audience, when they can "cut loose" and play anything they want!!!
Jonny Nutter was up next, and in his usual admirable fashion, he had worked hard to put together a set of unique numbers from the Dylan songbook. Jonny digs deep, and has a great knack for songs that suit his style. He has a very nice driving guitar style, and his vocals are sincere and rugged, suitable for Dylan's deep diverse, styles. We had a newcomer to our series, Eric Lawson up next, and he performed perhaps the most "dylan-esque" voice and guitar style- he bravely ventured into some of the long songs with many verses- but delivered them with spirit and obvious appreciation for Dylan's music. He had some familiar faces in the audience, and really broadened the nights variety. Good Ol' Todd Heslep breezed in from playing earlier in the evening up in New Martinsville, and gave us a solid set of his great vocals, and solid guitar work. He branched out from Dylan for two songs - one he said was a George Jones song, but Todd Burge pointed out it was an Elvis Costello song really! and a John Conley song. Then we had one of those late night treats, when Jeremy Mayle came back out for two songs, with Todd Burge accompanying him on harmonica. Jeremy was in his element and did a great job on these two songs deeper in the song book. We really appreciated Todd stopping in late after his gig in Marietta. He adds a thread of continuity to these Dylan events, as he has put on something similar for about 7-8 years; throughout the Mid OHio Valley.
So, as you can see, there was a solid, diverse night of music celebrating Bob Dylan's birthday, and supporting the work of Children's Home Society in the area. I'll be posting some pictures Bill Poole took in a separate posting.

Kathleen Coffee's CD release

I am eager to hear how Kathleen Coffee's CD release event went last night down in Princeton. I hope it was a great event, and gets her pumped for more circulating around for shows around the state, and promoting her great music. I have listened through several cycles of the CD in my car, driving around, and think it is fantastic. I like that she did it live, and it is very impressive. It takes one back to the nice memory of her visit to Parkersburg- her voice, her guitar playing, her lyrics are all stellar and really get you sitting up and taking notice. I have several copies of the CD if anyone wants one- I would like to keep a supply on hand. She is apparently coming up on June 7th for the songwriter contest/ event in Marietta as the benefit for the Colony Theater, with a performance or two through the day, and participating in the chance to open for Jason Wilber in the evening. It will be good to see her again.

Merle Haggard at the WV State Fair

I won two tickets to see Merle Haggard at the WV State Fair (I've never been to it)- on August 8th. These were a great prize- $42 each- which makes a pretty amazing prize for me to win. August seems a long way off, but I should be able to figure a way to make it into a good weekend.

Walter Trout at the Front Row is finalized

Walter Trout will be at the Front Row, Sunday night July 20th (I think I had previously mentioned monday the 21st). The deal is sealed now. Reminder that Jason Ricci is going to be at the Front Row Thursday, May 29th. So there continue to be exciting national touring acts to look forward to in town.

Bob Dylan Tribute tonight

Tonight is the night for the Bob Dylan birthday tribute at the Front Row- 9 pm. We'll start setting things up around 7 pm if you want to come early and see what's going on. I've had a cancellation in the line up, that I'm a little exasperated about, so I hope the audience gets their fill of music among the dedicated musicians who will be there.
Bill's got two DVD's to run if the mood is right- with the big screens that will be a nice touch I believe.
HOpe to see a lot of good music lovers out there tonight- help support our good cause!

Greens show last night in Marietta

The Greens put on a great show at the Marietta Brewing Company last night. Nathan had the high school graduation to attend, and was dapper in his tie all evening. It seemed to put him in hyper energy mode of inspired drumming, with some amazing work throughout the evening.
Andy opened up solo/ acoustic, awaiting Nathan's arrival. He included "Natural Voice" which I haven't heard for some time- that was great to hear. Then the Greens began with about 45 minutes of "acoustic" sound- an excellent set list for that sound- that really got the show kicked off much to the audience's liking. Mercy and Moving Picture were in there, Beekeeper.
Tip of the hat to Wes for giving me a little lesson in technology which I could learn to use to record the nights set list on my cell phone, instead of scrawling on a piece of paper; it would take me a while to learn to type letters on a phone keypad however.
The Greens really got into the groove and their was a festive and appreciative audience throughout the evening. Even the 80's party going on next door couldn't distract from the intense musical vibe the Greens were putting out- This was a solid night of song selections from the Greens play list; and had a little Hendrix mini set in the middle.
The Greens are on to a wedding reception/ private party tonight. Back in Parkersburg next Friday night at the Front Row; I expect many of the same folks that were there last night will migrate to Emerson Ave. for that great night of music.

Tomorrow night; Bob Dylan's birthdaytributebenefit

Saturday is Bob Dylan's Parkersburg birthday tribute, here at the Front Row, the reigning Champion of live music in Parkersburg. 4000 Emerson Ave. in the shopping plaza with Foodland and Curves (no fastballs, sliders, or screwballs, well on second thought.......). Bill Poole has put together some memorable shows over the years there. There are still many loyal patrons eager for sports but somehow Bill pulls off keeping various enthusiasts happy. BR 549 has played there, Marty Stuart, Commander Cody, Junior Brown, Watermelon Slim, Jason Ricci, the list grows. I was very happy to have a part in bringing Anais Mitchell to the Front Row; though it wasn't a usual venue for her, we had a great evening of music, for this rising star. And of course the local music! Bill gave Andy Tuck most of his start in performing live locally, with the epic open mikes and then the Greens epic shows over the years. There are too many to mention local acts who have benefited from the opportunity to play there. (Come on, reply with some of the glaring omissions I have here.........) I know, Patrick Sweaney, etc. .............

Anyway, Saturday night, May 24th, 9 pm, we're having a birthday tribute to the music of Bob Dylan. This is a benefit fund raiser for Children's Home Society of WV. We work tirelessly to support area children, youth, and families in such a wide variety of ways I can't capture it all here- we've run the emergency shelter for youth in town here for what will be 30 years next February (stay tuned for announcements about that anniversary event later in the year). We help support families in many ways where and when and how they need it. I never make too much of it at the tribute shows, 'cause I know people are there for the music, but any sign of generosity that folks might feel like giving is greatly appreciated. Once the music and contests and door prizes get flowing, I just sorta give up on the fund raising aspect.
We've got a line up of musicians who give of their talents to the cause, and love to perform songs and get the give and take of the audience response. I've got a few contests lined up for the fun-loving and frivilous (don't anybody take it too seriously, please). There is so much Dylan trivia out there, we could just do that all night, but there is an expectation that we have a little music...........
Give me a last minute boost of morale, if you have any suggestions, or offers to help in any way. I always get a little nervous about "no shows" from some of the music acts, so there will be room for a "walk in" set if any one still wants to warble a few Dylan tunes.

looking ahead to the daze of triptafan

Thanksgiving season will bring Aaron Phillips back to WV this year, according to my inside sources. Look for a few reunion shows possible around Thanksgiving when Aaron brings his saxophone/ flute/ guitar, van halen high kicks, incredible hulk green fists, high harmonies and derring-do. The Greens play the traditional Front Row gigs around then. Stay tuned for more build up.

Bob Dylan birthday tribute benefit

It is Wednesday afternoon; within three days of the tribute show. I am (yet again) so appreciative of the musicians who show so much enthusiasm for performing. The festivities begin aroun 9 pm Saturday night at the Front Row on Emerson Ave., Parkersburg. We'll be in there early getting things set up, so stop by early if you want to pitch in, or just enjoy the comraderie. I am still finalizing the line up, based on my usual "trying to make it work for everyone"- approach. Everyone is always a lot more laid back and cooperative than that, but I always stress a bit about it (not enough to leave any lasting problems!). Recent phone or e-mail check-in's with Craig Greening of Stone Road Band, Jeremy Mayle, Todd Heslep, Jonny Nutter, Eric Lawson, all give the thumbs up. I've got a few more to get back to me, and there's always the chance of some folks showing up ready to play that night. I do give the willingness to run it like an open mike, just giving priority to the folks I've worked with leading up to the event.
I've got a couple of contests ready to put into action if the circumstances allow. Thanks to everyone who can spread the word right up to Saturday night. Thanks to Bill Poole for the willingness to give it a whirl and for his fun things he sends my way. Most recently, an mp3 of Bob Dylan singing "Catfish."
I put a lot of energy into the event itself, and usually am pretty wiped out afterward, but I always appreciate feedback and input for future events, so don't hestitate to track me down.
It will barely be a deep breath, before Jason Ricci's show, the Greens at the Front Row, Jason Wilber coming to town, Steve Earle at Stuart's Opera House in Nelsonville, Walter Trout, and on.

marque at the Front Row

Here's the marque at the front row- giving some advance promo; to not only the Dylan Tribute, but the Jason Ricci fantastic night of music. I was telling Bill I appreciate his own advance publicity, since a lot of folks check it out the days leading up to a weekend. Familiar, yet eye catching! I remember getting a kick out of seeing Andy's "name in lights" when he first was doing the open mike's there a number of years ago. The Greens can still "pull 'em in."

Come'n out and hear the music on the Dylan Tribute this Saturday night. I can guarantee you an impressive evening of dedicated Dylan devotees pulling some out you thought you forgot. I wish I had time to "rehearse" my trio: love minus zero/ no limit; shelter from the storm; she belongs to me.

Post 888 - The Greens have some new shows posted

The Greens have added some shows at Six Pence Pub over the next months to their schedule. And one for 123 Pleasant St on June 13th.
I haven't gotten a report on how the OUtdoors Festival went in Pittsburgh over the weekend, with 28 North. I visited their very enjoyable and creative website over the weekend. I'll try to get a Greens News update before the weekend coming up.

Dylan tribute benefit

Within a day or so, I should be able to summarize the line up of musicians involved- just need to follow up with a few of the earlier interested folks. I have had some good later interest, so will be able to guarantee a solid line up of music. I will want to circulate around to the musicians for details about equipment needs (sharing drum kits???) and if folks want, song selections. I never worry about this, but I understand that some do.
If anyone has the chance to get some flyers out, they could stop by my office and pick some up. I like to get some to Kroger's, the libraries, the music stores, People's News, the North End Market's bulletin board, Foodlands, that kind of place.
My door prizes are shaping up alright- Dylan fans will probably be a little hard to "shop" for..... 'cause they probably have most of what they might want already!!! Stay tune all week for nearly daily updates on things related to the Benefit.

Nelsonville Art and Music Festival- saturday performances

I made it to the NAMF around 3 pm; unavoidably delayed. Uncle Monk was performing when I got there. Tommy Ramone and Claudia Tienan as a duet. Tommy played the mandolin primarily throughout, and handled the vocals almost entirely on what I was there for. Tommy was with the Ramones! Now they are an alt-country/ old timey songs/ bluegrass-y sounding thing. It was fun to see him around the festival the rest of the day, just enjoying all the other acts and having appreciative music fans approach him. We then saw Woody Pines and "the Lonesome Two" (though there were "3" for this show! Woody is a repeat from last year. Plays a national steel 'resonator" and has a VERY enjoyable style of singing, playing and song selection. Tim Peacock of the festival and Stuart's plays bass with this configuration. A nice clarinet and saxophone accompanist and a solid drummer round out the crew. He is a crowd favorite, and fits well into the overall festival line up for repeat performances. Sarah White was the next one I saw; a singer-songwriter from Virginia; with a good accompanist (who's name escapes me- sorry). I guess she had done the main stage the night before, too. Then it was over to the main stage for the rest of the evening. Moviola was from Columbus, a 5 piece band, 2 guitars, keyboard, bass and drums, lots of trading around the singing, guitar solos, and harmonizing. Relaxed, good for a festival. Dawn Landes, and a very multi-instrumentalist accompanying her- playing drums, setting up some electric bass/ keyboards, played harmonica, all kinds of stuff. She played both acoustic and electric in her diversity of original songs. She hails from Charlotteville VA (also). Justin Townes Earle was coming on at sunset. Steve Earle's son/ named after Townes Van Zandt. Has a good stage presence- a good song selection/ story teller- had an excellent side man- Cory- mandolin, harmonica, harmonies. Female bass player, who he is going to marry in a few months. Referenced Woody Guthrie, some Texas bluesmen influences; got the crowd pretty primed for the Avett Brothers.
The festival; moved from the park behind Rocky Boots in the town, out to the college campus, where the previous Hocking Folk Festival was held at this time for several years, is a very welcoming/ fun event. Vendors of arts, food, places to camp, and folks play music together. Weather cooperated while I was there; just a few sprinkles early on, I don't know how Friday night was.
The Avett Brothers were the headliners coming on around 10 pm. Big set up for them; some pretty specific things that wanted out of the sound system! Seth and Scott are the two brothers and there is a regular member the bass player Bob Crawford. There was a rockin' cello player with them, too. They are from North Carolina, and have developed a very loyal, enthusiastic following- they are tearing up the festival scene. Their music defies an easy classification- there are some terms thrown about: punk bluegrass; thrash folk; high energy hillbilly. They have a background in the grunge era of the 90's- that comes out in their vocals. They are incredibly high energy, and speedy in their tempo. The audience LOVES them- and they give it back. With the cool night air- the steam rising off them as they performed was a marvel of their exertion.
So, Tim Peacock and the crew have put on another great event and seem primed to keep going with these events- along with the regular great shows at Stuart's- many coming up over the summer months.

feel like i been gone a while.........

Phfew, I feel a little out of touch. Sorry to miss the Larry Neely show last night at the Front Row, I would have liked to hear Susan sing, since Steve and Susan are such enthusiastic music lovers, and we see them mostly at Greens shows, I wanted to get out and support her music, too!
Well, sometimes you got to be decisive. Tom Waits tickets for a show in June in Columbus went on sale yesterday and are already sold out. It didn't pay to ponder that one for a day.
Heading over to Nelsonville in a little while to take in the afternoon and evening at the Music Festival.
Tomorrow will start the countdown to the Bob Dylan tribute; I will start finalizing details with the musicians, and the venue and sound. We'll see what kind of flyers we can get up around town during this week lead up time to Saturday night.
Was mostly listening to John C. Fogerty while driving back and forth across the state Wed. and Fri. An interesting mix of old and newer songs.
The Greens seem to be playing during the day at a Festival up in Pittsburgh. It says 12 noon, but that could just be the opening time. If they were in town last night for a private party, we didn't get a chance to talk to Andy; probably on a whirlwind trip. Next Friday they will be at the Marietta Brewing Company, for what is always a nice venue/ show for them.

Jason Wilber show tickets

I am getting good enthusiasm for the upcoming Jason Wilber show here at the neighborhood center. I know folks don't tend to want to commit to buying tickets ahead of time, but I encourage you to, since there is a finite space to this venue. I will be out of town for a few days but the tickets are ready to go and available when you can track me down. I will be making a more concentrated effort next week. I am eagerly awaiting the details of the songwriter event in Marietta June 7th before really making a push about the June 8th show here.

Revisit past posts for details, or contact me.

nice lookin' poster, eh?

Spread the word! Its gonna be a great show, guaranteed! Come out and support a good cause, and enjoy some fine ol' Bob Dylan tunes by a variety of enthusiastic musicians. See who wins the "brand new leopard skin pill box hat."

New Picture of Andy and Ben rockin' out on the Greens myspace

There is a new picture up on the front part of the Greens myspace, of Andy and Ben rocking out- somebody must have finally got some pix downloaded- I assume there are more of the same vintage somewhere!

Fred gives me a good music tip

Fred, a very like minded music lover, brought me over a CD - Dan Colehour, "straight to the highway"- for a listen. This is comfortable/ familiar yet unique music on first listening. Has a website if you want some bio info.

Out of town for a few days starting tomorrow

Don't worry about a gap in posts- I will be out of town for a few days to a conference. I will be back in time to hopefully get to the first night of the Nelsonville Art and Music Festival on Friday. If not, the weekend days have plenty of good music and acts. Bundle up for those late night performances!!!
I'm missing hearing some Greens! (kale, chard, spinach, lettuce, parsley, cabbage, etc.) I hope they have good weather and a good time up in Pittsburgh Saturday. I don't know who's having the private party this Friday night with them playing. Marietta Brewing Co. is May 23rd, the night before the Dylan Tribute.

Bob Dylan tribute benefit updates

A band from New Martinsville has asked to participate in the Bob Dylan Tribute. They are "The Saturn Society"- and they have a my space site, where you can get a pretty good sense of them. Robbie told me they have a 70 song repetoire of Dylan songs! He was a fun/ enthusiastic guy to talk to on the phone. I will be communicating with him more between now and the show, to make things hospitable for the band down here in Parkersburg.
If you can distribute flyers around town, stop by and see me, and pick some up. Bill always has great looking flyers for shows, and I've got some of my humble little ones, that don't use up so much printer ink!! Send around an e-mail to anybody you think would be interested. The details repeated: Saturday, May 24th (Dylan's actual birthday as it is), 9 pm at the Front Row. $5 donation goes to benefit Children's Home Society of WV in our work with area children and families. Contact Steve Tuck for information: 485-0650.
There is a weekend festival in Hibbing Minnesota, Bob Dylan's home town, featuring Ramblin' Jack Elliott among others.
For those who have been coming to recent tribute series events, you know I have been finding at least one "goofy" door prize (the Hank Williams bobble head, the yodeling pickle, the Johnny Cash action figure) I am stumped for a good one for the Bob Dylan tribute, so if anybody has any ideas. Bob's songs lend themselves to many obscure lyrical references, that could come out as a novelty door prize, so get your thinking caps on. I have the humdrum normal door prizes lining up pretty good, but they are just normal things- CD's and books. If anybody has any ideas for some simple "interactive" contests (friendly competition type stuff) let me know too. I usually come up with these myself, but I never know what creative minds might be at work out there...............
I will give it into the beginning of the week before I start circulating any song lists, or "requests" for certain songs to be performed.

Jazz at the Wheel House Saturday night

Shauna (and Bubba) opened the Wheel House for a group wanting to have a little jazz on a Saturday night. Earl and Sandy Tucker and a few friends. It was a very nice vibe- a pretty decent crowd. Earl was really flailing on that Guitar; getting people impressed. JT, Linda must have had something to do with the arranging of the event. I didn't get to talk to Shauna about what the future holds for the Wheel House. This just seemed a "take it one step at a time" event; and it was a good one! The bar was stripped down to minimal offering, but it suited the event just fine. We didn't stay to see what happened as things might have got hopping later into the sets.

Out of my massive vinyl record sale collection

I have these vinyl record sales as a fund raiser for the agency. I announce I take in old collections of vinyl record, and then several times a year I have sales, with the proceeds going to the work of CHS with area children and families. I have had my ups and downs, getting some really great record collections donated, and then I get a huge amount of records that no one will ever buy, and they keep accumulating. There are always a few diamonds in the rough however, that one person may overlook and another be looking for. There are also novelty items that amuse me and others. Then there are quirky sub-collections that I am amassing. My Herb Albert collection is impressive (especially that whip cream one).
So Eddy Arnold died the other day. I have a stellar collection of over 20 Eddy Arnold records. These cover a range of his career (judging by the age he appears on the covers). I know he sold 85 million records, and I only have 20 of those, but still. The songs he covers range wildly across the spectrum. If anyone wants an Eddy Arnold memorial collection I am the man to see. We could play 6 degrees of separation with this collection, and see where it gets us. Of the album covers he has a tendency to have just a plain old picture of himself on the cover. There is one where he is walking along a railroad track with a guitar over his shoulder, and that is the only down to earth looking one. There is a cover where he has some flowers and chocolates for a date or something. Most are just him sitting there. Most are produced by Chet Atkins.

Greens in May

The two local shows upcoming for the Greens are May 23 at the Marietta Brewing Co. and May 30 at the Front Row. I'll be trying to catch up on some of their other news here in the next few days- if ya know some, let me in on it.

I have to give some reminder updates

I have to give some reminder updates (sorry)

Our Bob Dylan Birthday Tribute is Saturday, May 24th starting at 9 pm at the Front Row on Emerson Ave. in Parkersburg. This is a benefit for the agency I work for: Children's Home Society of WV, donation is $5. We work with children and families in the area, and can assure you this fund raiser helps our work, and helps give a boost to some families. Local musicians play sets of songs, donating their time to this cause, and their enthusiasm for live local music. I have a number of commitments, and will be checking back with some others this week. By next weekend I should have a pretty definite line up. Dylan's song list is way too long to worry about covering even "eras" very well, so we'll just be happy for whatever mix we get. I usually have a few trivis type contests waiting in the wings to fill in some time between set up for the next act, but I don't need to use these if the music is flowing well. I bring some door prizes to keep the festivities cheery.

Jason Wilber is coming to my neighborhood center for a coffee house / house concert atmosphere on Sunday, June 8th at 7 pm. Tickets for this are $15 (contact me). There is limited seating, so I need to know ahead of time. This is at 1739 St. Mary's Ave. in Parkersburg. I have been in correspondence with Jason since last fall's show in Charleston about coming to this area. On Saturday, June 7th, he will be at the Mid OHio Valley Players theater in Marietta for a show wrapping up a full day of songwriter events. Todd Burge is hosting this great all day event. The Galley, up the street from the Theater is where most of the daytime activity will be. Visit www.songwriternight.com for more upcoming/ updated information. There will be a lot of local songwriters showcased, culminating in a few folks having the chance to open for Jason that evening. Jason has a my space site and a regular website to check out. We have seen him many times in the last 5-6 years as John Prine's lead guitarist. He has made a huge mark in these shows for his fine accompanying work. I greatly admire his solo work also. He has some great poignant lyrics, a great voice and great variety to his styles of music. He has a radio show (interviewing etc.) out of Bloomington Indiana, that most readers of this blog would enjoy.

The Nelsonville Art and Music Festival is next weekend. This has merged the Hock Hocking Folk Festival (which had been held at this time of year) with the other festival that had been in July for a few years. I have seen Greg Brown, Fred Eaglesmith, Iris Dement, Todd Snider, Stacey Earle and Mark Stuart among many good performers at these events. The Avett Brothers, Bettye Lavette, Justin Townes Earle, Red Stick Ramblers are among the most notable this year. Its starts Friday, and runs all day Saturday, and until 6 pm on Sunday.

I am hosting a third night of music at my neighborhood center on June 27th. The Stone Road Band will be performing that Friday night from 7 to 10 pm. They will be at the Dylan tribute, too prior to that for folks to check out. I will talk more about them in the lead up to the late June event.

Bill Poole has Jason Ricci coming to the Front Row again, so quickly after his winter show that wow-ed folks. This is May 29th a Thursday. Over the summer he has Walter Trout coming, and Watermelon Slim returning also. Keep checking back on these.

I don't know if the Court Street Grille sells advance tickets but Tommy Womack is going to be there June 13th. (Pomeroy Ohio).

This summarizes a bunch of good opportunities, and things with some great connections.

Arlo Guthrie in Columbus August 10th

I see Arlo is playing in Columbus in August; I'll try to wrestle up some tickets. August 10th at the lifestyle communities pavilion. It would be fun to see what Arlo is up to these days. Last show was the Mountain Stage at the Clay Center in Charleston a year ago February. The family reunion tour, with Sarah and Johnny Irion.

Bob Dylan information website

Jeremy Mayle let Bill Poole know about a reference to our Bob Dylan Birthday tribute that is on this comprehensive bob dylan website: www.expectingrain.com - on the list of citings for May 8th, there we are at number 5- the bob dylan birthday tribute in good ol' Parkersburg West Virginia. This website is a dizzy, mind boggling set of connections to anything related to Bob Dylan and friends. You could spend hours there of course!!! More links later I'm sure, but just this brief reference now. Watch out, there could be a barrage of Dylan postings over the next two weeks.

Tommy Womack at Court St. Grille in Pomeroy

I see that Tommy Womack will be at the Court St. Grille in Pomeroy OH on June 13th (Friday). After being encouraged to see him sometime (after seeing Will Kimbrough) this past weekend, that seems a fortunate upcoming opportunity. I know its not "Daddy" but at least it will complete the tri-cycle with Will, Todd Snider and Tommy.
Todd is opening for Was (was not) in Columbus tonight. Darn- too late to go. Was (was, too) reading about Was (was not) this weekend, rambling around from Todd's website. Some interesting stuff going on!

Wheel House rises from ashes phoenix-like

The Wheel House is having a jazz night this Saturday night, May 10th 9 pm for a $10 cover. Shauna is once again taking on the transition from management that left. I'll try to get a longer term picture of what might go on there on into the future. My next event would have been slated for July there- the Woody Guthrie tribute show.

Wheel House "change"

I guess Jimmy C's tenure running the Wheel House is over. That's about all I can say for sure until I get some more information. I will try to find out some info from reliable sources so any readers can know of what the future may hold for this venue, and its "home" to most of my tribute series shows these past few years. The Greens "house band" denotation will likely be a thing of the past, too; with many fond memories of both on-going connections. Stay tuned.

traveling music today to Charleston and back

CD's I listened to today on a trip to Charleston and back.
First up: Bob Dylan's Slow Train Coming. I had loaned this to Tyler Storey to get some ideas of some songs to play at the Bob Dylan Tribute, so I had it out. "When you gonna wake up" is one of my landmark songs "when you gonna wake up and strengthen the things that remain" seems like a nice little approach to the craziness of our world. I guess this was the first signs of his "religious" period, but they are pretty solid songs.
Second CD up: Todd Snider's "Happy to Be Here" - just hadn't listened to that one in a while; good memory lane for when those songs first came out, and the excitement of hearing his creativity burst through. Long Year was such an achingly personal exposure song; db cooper extended the legacy of Todd's songs about unusual cultural / folk hero / real stories adapted to his story telling way. Had to hear Todd's version of "betty was black, willie was white" after hearing Will Kimbrough sing it the other day. Just the pretty much straight version of the ballad of the devil's back bone tavern. Some honky tonk, dixie land band / new orleans instrumentation on this one, that you tend to forget until re-hearing.

return trip: Mary Gauthier (between daylight and dark) - a frequent listen these days
finishing up with: Fred Eaglesmith: Tinderbox- getting familiar with it upon multiple listenings now.

Six Pence Pub- Cinco de Mayo

Andy had a solo show at Six Pence last night - a rare MOnday night appearance in Parkersburg for the hard workin' fella. It was a pretty small crowd, I guess not what was expected for a "beer drinking" holiday (such as St. Patrick's Day etc.)

Set list (for the first set)
Little Warrior
Forlorn Blues
Apple Pie
Come on Back to Me
What's so great about the Great Depression? (new song)
On an average night (new song)
Vacuum Blues
Down
Anon
Ring of Fire
When Things Go Wrong
Dark Hollow
Drag Yourself (through the day)
Oily Rags
Big Ol' Betsy
Chinaski
Barbara and Joseph (apologies for the name- the truck driver murder ballad........)
Homeless Melodies
Animal Song
Its Not Enough

break

Andy called me up to sing our usual duet/ harmonies; a goodly amount of John Prine songs, some Bob Dylan songs, some The Band songs, Friend of the Devil, and we sang two of Andy's (an encore of Apple Pie, and Feeling Low Down on High Street)

Andy did Truckstop Religion in his last set; complete with bottleneck slide. He did a couple more brand new songs then too to finish things up.

Danny reports he's moving to Morgantown (in advance of the whole band ending up there, for more focused promoting, rehearsing, creating, etc.) Good to see Lyndsey out on a MOnday evening. Andy's finishing up college classes this week, and getting back into the yard work and construction pretty hot and heavy.
Some good solid guitar and harmonica work tonight by Andy, and plenty of enthusiasm for his songs to make an appreciative audience satisfied.

Greens add a HUGE amount of dates in 2008

You have to be exhausted to see the updates of upcoming shows on the Greens site. They have shows at the Front Row clear to the end of the year; Marietta Brewing Co. shows; Parkersburg Homecoming (you can hardly count the number of people who mention seeing them at Homecoming last year- diverse people who don't make the "bar" scene; just good community folks and such; private parties all over the map; ventures to Fayetteville (whitewater country) and a return to Lewisburg (the Wild Bean). I will be interested to hear about the Thanksgiving gigs- these have become institutions in Parkersburg!!! We'll hope the Greens well between now and then; hopefully some ventures out on a mini-tour; some greater recognition in bigger markets; some more recording (!!!) and everyone settled in near each other for some rehearsing time and new bursts of creativity!!!!

Will Kimbrough links to my blog for my review of the Fur Peace Ranch show

I am honored that Will Kimbrough on his blog cited my "review" of the Fur Peace Ranch show- I like his blog for the directness/ simplicity and frequent updates! This makes him more of a kindred spirit than some "bloggers"- who are far more detailed and eloquent in composing their posts than I!!! I just like to get something out there and keep the posts separate as to topic.

Bill Poole's updates

Bill Poole says Mike Morningstar had a good crowd Friday night at the Front Row. Mike has offered to open for Watermelon Slim's return to Parkersburg in August; a benefit event for Vietnam Veterans? Bill is hoping Jason Ricci's return later this month will get a good response, on a Thursday night. This was a stunning show during the winter, and its exciting and encouraging that there is a return engagement so quickly. Bill was impressed with the very large turnout the other week for the Greens show; among the best of recent times for the Front Row. The Greens are slated to be back at the end of the month; the day after Jason Ricci, as a matter of fact. Besides a gig in Marietta, this will be the next Parkersburg gig for the Greens, so there should be some eager fans awaiting that show.
Bill and I checked in about the Bob Dylan birthday tribute / benefit; and we're getting into the promotion phase, and lining up the acts performing. I already have the set list for one act; so that helps when talking to others.
I had to thank Bill for his sending me of "out of the blue" little video links. Marmalade's song from 1969 was an amazing transporting back in time. I will try to link it to this blog for some intriguing viewing. I'm not sure if you are under a certain age whether it will have much impact!

will kimbrough's websites and links

Its a very pleasant surf through Will Kimbrough's website, and links (vast and intriguing as they are!). He has a nice blog; with short, frequent entries about his various projects and shows, and such. Catches you up to speed quickly on his news. I hope there will be something there in the next few days about the Fur Peace Ranch show. www.willkimbrough.com - his previous stuff was more in "waxy silver" records, but he seems to have shifted over focus to the main page. I suppose his my space is pretty updated and good, too.

Will Kimbrough- great show at the Fur Peace Ranch

Will Kimbrough, who I had never seen perform, but who I was already a fan- etched himself fully into my "must see" category last night, with a great performance at the Fur Peace Ranch over in Ohio. Opening act was Pete Huttlinger, who was primarily an instrumentalist; though he sang a nice John Denver song as a closer, and did a great job. He apparently was one of the instructors this week at the Ranch, and put on a great guitar playing show.

Will, starting out on two songs solo, then brought out a drummer and bass player, to make up his Trio, that performed most of the night, with one other interlude of solo work. The variety to his work is impressive; some great guitar work, particularly the slide guitar stuff; some hard driving, heavy rock kinda stuff, blended in with some soft reflective songs, and then some political/ social commentary wry songs thrown in. He's an intriguing fellow with some obviously good stories and connections to many admired folks in the Americana music vein. Played a number of songs off "Americanitis." Played some songs off "Daddy at the Women's Club."
(I want to delve into the history of the song a little further after this post, but) I guess Horseshoe Lake is co-written between Todd Snider and Will; he did a great version of it, followed immediately by "Betty was black, Willie was white" (the Tommy Womack song done by the Biscuits and Todd Snider on various albums). He rotated among an acoustic guitar and two electrics, giving an impressive display of his guitar playing; his song writing; his singing, his story telling. The bass and drums guys were spirited participants who also showed their versatility.
This was an appreciative audience, I was curious how many would have known of him, but if they didn't know him they were quickly won over to enjoy and respect his craft.
I will follow his concert schedule closely- he is one to see if anywhere close, and to see repeatedly, to get a fuller picture of his breadth of music and performance.

Andy at Six Pence Pub MOnday night 8 pm

In an apparent Cinco de Mayo promotion, Six Pence Pub will be having a live music festivity on Monday evening, May, 5th with Andy Tuck. 7th St. Parkersburg, out near the Kroger's, Der Daug Haus, etc. area. Perhaps Andy will dust off The Professional Amateurs; with its classic line about "its cinco de mayo, and I'm somewhere in Ohio" - I don't know if anyone is accompanying him for this particular weeknight gig. Did I mention elsewhere that I haven't heard "feeling low down on High Street" lately?

tickets on sale now for Jason Wilber in Parkersburg June 8th

I have tickets made up for Jason Wilber's performance at my "coffee house" / "house concert" at 7 pm on Sunday June 8th here at 1739 St. Mary's Ave. Parkersburg. $15- limited seating, so I will try to sell out, so get your tickets early. I will talk about this throughout the month. Jason's CD's have been getting steady play time on my CD players, and his music is fantastic. He's got a great voice; his guitar playing (as a solo performer) is right on for his songs; his lyrics are masterful with humor and human observations. His guitar playing for John Prine, as I believe I have often mentioned is so great an accompaniment for John's songs that it makes them memorable for ever. I have tickets with me, pretty much all the time, so pick some up- you could even begin "reserving" the comfortable couches and chairs for a few dollars more. Ask the folks who came to see Kathleen Coffee; there are some comfortable ways to enjoy music here at the humble store front.

Bob Dylan Birthday Tribute benefit May 24th

The promotion has begun in earnest for the Bob Dylan Birthday Tribute benefit On May 24th. Bill Poole has included it in his May line up announcement. He also has a 70's theme event along with solid musical line up. Jason Ricci is returning this month for a Thursday show; if you recall, that was a fantastic performance of high energy stuff a few months back (january?) that wow-ed the audience.
I will give frequent updates on musicians lined up to perform for the Dylan tribute. I will begin to amass my kooky and normal door prizes; probably will not need to go with any contests, because the music is likely to be pretty solid (no filler needed!!) Any help in promoting is always greatly appreciated- flyers are ready and available to go up around town; spreading the word personally, forwarding e-mails etc. Show starts at 9 pm; $5 donation at the door; unless you want to donate early- I'll conjure up some sort of ticket!!!

Andy's Cinco de Mayo ppaaarrrrttttyyyyyyyyy?

The long drawn out word "party" is an inside joke; I don't suppose who it's intended for will read this post unless I draw them to it.... But anyway, its listed in today's Free Time of the Parkersburg News that Andy is playing MOnday night at Six Pence Pub. I presume (if this is accurate) that it is some sort of Cinco de Mayo celebration; promoted by the mexican beeers and their various take offs. But, always a reason to hear Andy's music is fine!!!

Will Kimbrough Saturday night at Fur Peace Ranch

I am going to see Will Kimbrough at the Fur Peace Ranch Saturday night. Apparently there are still tickets available, if you care to join us for this enjoyable venue. Will is an award winning instrumentalist; creative song writer, supporter of numerous other musicians endeavors. I "discovered" him through Todd Snider, as a good buddy. He works with Adrienne Young among others who I follow closely. His own CD's are excellent- some good social commentary mixed among good story-songs and observations on life. This will be only my second trip to Fur Peace Ranch, and the line ups the rest of the year have many good shows to come. This is over in "Darwin Ohio"- not too far out of Athens, down US 33 back towards Pomeroy.
